Chapter 31

Songs and prayers for every feeling.

For the Chief Musician. A Psalm by David. In you, Yahweh, I find safety. Never let me be put to shame. Rescue me because you are righteous.

Listen closely to me. Deliver me quickly. Be a strong rock for me, a fortress to save me.

For you are my rock and my fortress, so for the sake of your reputation, lead and guide me.

Pull me out of the trap they secretly set for me, for you are my refuge.

Into your hand I commit my spirit. You redeem me, Yahweh, God of truth.

I hate those who worship false gods, but I trust in Yahweh.

I will be glad and rejoice in your faithful love, for you have seen my suffering. You have known my soul in its troubles.

You haven't handed me over to my enemy; you have given me freedom.

Have mercy on me, Yahweh, for I am suffering. My eyes, my soul, and my body are all wasting away from sadness.

My life is spent with sorrow, and my years with groaning. My strength is failing because of my sin, and my bones are wasting away.

Because of all my enemies, my neighbors despise me, and my friends are afraid of me. Those who see me on the street run away from me.

I am forgotten, like a dead person; I am like a broken pot.

I hear the slander of many, and terror is all around me. They are ganging up against me, plotting to kill me.

But I trust in you, Yahweh. I said, "You are my God."

My future is in your hands. Rescue me from my enemies and from those who are chasing me.

Show your favor to your servant. Save me because of your unfailing love.

Yahweh, don't let me be disgraced, because I have called on you. Let the wicked be disgraced; let them be silent in the grave.

Silence the lying lips that speak arrogantly, proudly, and contemptuously against good people.

How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who respect you, and which you have shown to those who take shelter in you, in front of all people!

You hide them in the safety of your presence from human plots. You secretly keep them in a dwelling away from quarreling tongues.

Praise Yahweh, for he has shown me his amazing love in a strong city.

In my panic, I said, "I am cut off from your sight." Even so, you heard my prayer when I cried to you.

Love Yahweh, all you who are loyal to him! Yahweh protects the faithful, but he fully repays those who act proudly.

Be strong, and let your heart be brave, all you who hope in Yahweh.
