For the Chief Musician; set to “The Doe of the Morning.” A Psalm by David. My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from my groaning words?
My God, I cry out during the day, but you don't answer; I cry out at night, and I can't be silent.
But you are holy, you who are praised by Israel.
Our ancestors trusted in you. They trusted, and you rescued them.
They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were not disappointed.
But I am like a worm, not even a man; people insult me and look down on me.
Everyone who sees me makes fun of me. They sneer and shake their heads, saying,
“He trusts in Yahweh; let Yahweh save him. Let Yahweh rescue him, since he is pleased with him.”
But you are the one who brought me out of the womb. You made me feel safe while I was at my mother’s breasts.
I was dependent on you from birth. You have been my God since I was born.
Don’t be far from me, because trouble is near, and there is no one to help.
Many bulls have surrounded me. Strong bulls from Bashan have encircled me.
They open their mouths wide against me like a roaring lion tearing its prey.
I am poured out like water. All my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it has melted inside me.
My strength is dried up like a broken piece of pottery. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. You have laid me in the dust of death.
For dogs have surrounded me. A group of evil people has closed in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones. People stare and look at me.
They divide my clothes among themselves. They gamble for my clothing.
But don't stay far away, Yahweh. You are my helper; hurry to help me.
Save me from the sword, and spare my precious life from the power of dogs.
Rescue me from the lion's mouth! You have answered me and saved me from the horns of wild oxen.
I will tell my brothers about your name; I will praise you among the assembled people.
All of you who respect Yahweh, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! All you descendants of Israel, stand in awe of him!
For he has not ignored or hated the suffering of the afflicted. He has not turned away from them, but when they cried to him, he listened.
My praise in the great assembly comes from you. I will fulfill my promises in front of those who respect him.
The humble will eat and be satisfied. Those who seek Yahweh will praise him. May your hearts live forever.
All the people on earth will remember and turn to Yahweh. All the families of the nations will worship before you.
Because the kingdom belongs to Yahweh. He rules over the nations.
All the rich people on earth will eat and worship. All those who are dying will bow before him, even those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Future generations will serve him. People yet to come will be told about the Lord.
They will come and announce his righteousness to a people who will be born later, because he has done it.
