Leviticus

Chapter 6

How to live close to a holy God.

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

If anyone sins by being unfaithful to Yahweh, and deceives his neighbor about something entrusted to him, or a business deal, or by robbery, or by taking advantage of his neighbor,

or if he finds something lost and lies about it, or swears falsely about any of these sins a person might commit,

then if he has sinned and is guilty, he must return what he took by robbery, or what he got by taking advantage of someone, or the deposit entrusted to him, or the lost item he found,

or anything else he swore falsely about. He must return it in full, and add an additional fifth to it. He must give it to the rightful owner on the day he is found guilty.

He must also bring his guilt offering to Yahweh: an unblemished ram from the flock, valued by you, as a guilt offering to the priest.

The priest will perform a ritual of cleansing for him before Yahweh, and he will be forgiven for whatever he did to become guilty.”

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“Give these instructions to Aaron and his sons: ‘This is the law for the burnt offering: The burnt offering must stay on the altar’s fire grate all night until morning, and the altar fire must be kept burning.

The priest must put on his linen garments and linen undergarments. Then he is to remove the ashes remaining from the burnt offering consumed by fire on the altar, and place them beside the altar.

Then he must take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place.

The fire on the altar must be kept burning continuously; it must never go out. The priest must add wood to it every morning, arrange the burnt offering on it, and burn the fat from the peace offerings on it.

The fire on the altar must always be kept burning; it must not go out.

“‘This is the law for the grain offering: Aaron’s sons must present it before Yahweh, in front of the altar.

The priest is to take a handful of fine flour and oil from the grain offering, along with all the frankincense placed on it, and burn it on the altar as a pleasing aroma, a memorial portion, to Yahweh.

Aaron and his sons are to eat the leftover portion. It must be eaten without yeast in a holy place, in the courtyard of the Tent of Meeting.

It must not be baked with yeast. I have given it to them as their share of my offerings made by fire. It is most holy, just like the sin offering and the guilt offering.

Every male among Aaron’s descendants may eat it. This is their lasting share from Yahweh’s offerings made by fire throughout your generations. Anything that touches these offerings becomes holy.’”

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“This is the offering that Aaron and his sons must present to Yahweh on the day he is appointed: one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half in the evening.

It is to be prepared with oil on a griddle. When it is thoroughly mixed, you are to bring it in. You must offer the baked pieces of the grain offering as a pleasing aroma to Yahweh.”

The anointed priest from among his sons, who takes his place, must offer it. It is a permanent rule that it must be completely burned to Yahweh.

Every grain offering made by a priest must be completely burned up. It must not be eaten.

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“Tell Aaron and his sons: ‘This is the rule for the sin offering: The sin offering must be killed in the same place where the burnt offering is killed, in front of Yahweh. It is extremely holy.

The priest who offers it to make up for sin must eat it. It must be eaten in a holy place, in the courtyard of the Tent of Meeting.

Anything that touches its meat will become holy. If any of its blood splatters on a piece of clothing, you must wash that clothing in a holy place.

But any clay pot in which it was boiled must be broken. If it was boiled in a bronze pot, the pot must be scrubbed and rinsed with water.

Every male priest may eat from it. It is extremely holy.

However, no sin offering from which any blood is brought into the Tent of Meeting to make a payment for sin in the Holy Place shall be eaten. It must be burned with fire.
