Chapter 23

How to live close to a holy God.

Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,

"Tell the people of Israel: 'These are Yahweh's appointed festivals, which you are to announce as sacred assemblies. These are my appointed festivals.

You are to work for six days, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a sacred assembly. You must not do any regular work. It is a Sabbath to Yahweh wherever you live.

These are Yahweh's appointed festivals, the sacred assemblies, which you are to announce at their scheduled times.

In the first month, on the evening of the fourteenth day, is Yahweh's Passover.

On the fifteenth day of that same month is the Festival of Unleavened Bread to Yahweh. For seven days you must eat unleavened bread.

On the first day you are to hold a sacred assembly. You must not do any regular work.

But for seven days, you must bring offerings made by fire to Yahweh. The seventh day is a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work.'

Yahweh spoke to Moses:

“Tell the people of Israel: ‘When you enter the land I am giving you and harvest its crops, you must bring the first bundle of your harvest to the priest.

He will wave the bundle before Yahweh so it will be accepted on your behalf. The priest must wave it on the day after the Sabbath.

On the day you wave the bundle, you must offer a flawless male lamb, one year old, as a burnt offering to Yahweh.

Along with it, bring a grain offering of four quarts of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to Yahweh, a pleasing aroma; and a drink offering of one quart of wine.

You must not eat any bread, roasted grain, or fresh grain until this very day, until you have brought the offering to your God. This is a law for all time for your descendants, wherever you live.

“‘You must count seven full weeks from the day after the Sabbath, from the day you brought the bundle for the wave offering.

Count fifty days until the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then you must present a new grain offering to Yahweh.

From your homes, you must bring two loaves of bread as a wave offering. Each loaf must be made from four quarts of fine flour, baked with yeast, as first offerings to Yahweh.

Along with the bread, you must present seven flawless lambs, one year old, one young bull, and two rams. They will be a burnt offering to Yahweh, with their grain offerings and drink offerings, an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to Yahweh.

You must offer one male goat as a sin offering and two male lambs, one year old, as a fellowship offering.

The priest will wave them before Yahweh as a wave offering, along with the bread of the first produce and the two lambs. These will be holy to Yahweh for the priest.

You must declare that same day a sacred assembly; you must not do any regular work. This is a law for all time for your descendants, wherever you live.

“‘When you harvest the crops of your land, do not completely harvest the very edges of your field, and do not gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigners. I am Yahweh your God.’”

Yahweh spoke to Moses:

“Tell the people of Israel: ‘On the first day of the seventh month, you are to have a day of solemn rest, a memorial commemorated with trumpet blasts, a sacred assembly.

You must not do any regular work, and you must bring an offering made by fire to Yahweh.’”

Yahweh spoke to Moses:

“However, the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It will be a sacred assembly for you. You must deny yourselves and present an offering made by fire to Yahweh.

You must not do any kind of work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, to make amends for you before Yahweh your God.

Anyone who does not go without food on that day will be cut off from their people.

I will destroy anyone who does any kind of work on that day from among their people.

You must not do any kind of work. This is a law forever, for all your future generations, wherever you live.

It will be a special Sabbath day of rest for you, and you must go without food. On the ninth day of the month in the evening, from that evening until the next evening, you must observe your Sabbath.”

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“Tell the Israelites: ‘On the fifteenth day of this seventh month, there will be the Festival of Shelters for seven days to Yahweh.

On the first day there will be a holy gathering; you must not do any regular work.

For seven days you must bring offerings made by fire to Yahweh. On the eighth day there will be another holy gathering for you, and you must bring offerings made by fire to Yahweh. It is a special assembly; you must not do any regular work.

“‘These are Yahweh’s appointed festivals, which you are to announce as holy gatherings, to bring offerings made by fire to Yahweh—burnt offerings, grain offerings, sacrifices, and drink offerings—each on its own day;

This is in addition to Yahweh’s Sabbaths, your gifts, all your promised offerings, and all your voluntary offerings that you give to Yahweh.

“‘So on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have gathered the crops from the land, you are to celebrate Yahweh’s festival for seven days. The first day will be a day of complete rest, and the eighth day will also be a day of complete rest.

On the first day you are to take the fruit of goodly trees, palm branches, boughs of leafy trees, and willows from the brook, and you are to rejoice before Yahweh your God for seven days.

You must celebrate it as a festival to Yahweh for seven days each year. This is a law forever for all your future generations. You must celebrate it in the seventh month.

You must live in temporary shelters for seven days. All native-born Israelites must live in temporary shelters,

so that your future generations will know that I made the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.’”

Moses announced Yahweh’s appointed festivals to the Israelites.
