Leviticus

Chapter 14

How to live close to a holy God.

Yahweh said to Moses,

“This is the rule for a person with a skin disease on the day they are to be made clean. They must be brought to the priest,

and the priest will go outside the camp. The priest will examine them, and if the skin disease has healed,

then the priest will tell them to get two live, clean birds, cedar wood, red yarn, and hyssop for the one who is to be made clean.

The priest will tell them to kill one of the birds in a clay pot over fresh, running water.

Then, for the live bird, he will take it along with the cedar wood, the red yarn, and the hyssop, and dip them and the live bird into the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water.

He will sprinkle the person who is to be cleaned from the skin disease seven times and declare them clean. Then he will let the live bird go free into the open field.

“The person who is to be made clean must wash their clothes, shave off all their hair, and bathe in water; then they will be clean. After that, they may come into the camp, but they must stay outside their tent for seven days.

On the seventh day, they must shave all the hair from their head, beard, and eyebrows—all their hair must be shaved off. They must wash their clothes and bathe their body in water; then they will be clean.

“On the eighth day, they must bring two male lambs that have no defects, one female lamb a year old that has no defects, three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, and one log of oil.

The priest who cleanses them will present the person to be made clean, and these offerings, before Yahweh at the entrance of the Meeting Tent.

“The priest will take one of the male lambs and offer it as a guilt offering, along with the log of oil, and wave them as a wave offering before Yahweh.

He must kill the male lamb in the holy place where they kill the sin offering and the burnt offering; because the guilt offering belongs to the priest, just like the sin offering. It is most holy.

The priest will take some of the blood from the guilt offering and put it on the tip of the right ear of the person to be made clean, on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot.

The priest will take some of the log of oil and pour it into the palm of his own left hand.

The priest will dip his right finger into the oil in his left hand and sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before Yahweh.

The priest will put some of the remaining oil that is in his hand on the tip of the right ear of the person to be made clean, on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot, on top of the blood from the guilt offering.

The rest of the oil in the priest’s hand he will put on the head of the person to be made clean, and the priest will make atonement for them before Yahweh.

The priest will offer the sin offering and make things right for the person who is being purified because of their uncleanness. Afterward, he will kill the burnt offering.

Then the priest will offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. The priest will make things right for the person, and they will be clean.

If the person is poor and cannot afford so much, they must take one male lamb as a trespass offering to be presented, to make things right for them. They also need one-tenth of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, and a log of oil.

They also need two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whatever they can afford. One will be a sin offering, and the other will be a burnt offering.

On the eighth day, the person will bring these to the priest for their purification, at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, before Yahweh.

The priest will take the lamb for the trespass offering and the log of oil, and he will present them as a special offering before Yahweh.

He will kill the lamb for the trespass offering. The priest will take some of the blood from the trespass offering and put it on the tip of the right ear of the person being purified, on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot.

The priest will pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand.

Then, with his right finger, the priest will sprinkle some of the oil from his left hand seven times before Yahweh.

After that, the priest will put some of the oil that is in his hand on the tip of the right ear of the person being purified, on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot, in the same place where the blood of the trespass offering was applied.

The rest of the oil in the priest’s hand he will put on the head of the person being purified to make things right for them before Yahweh.

He will offer one of the turtledoves or one of the young pigeons, whichever he can afford,

even whatever he can afford, one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, along with the grain offering. The priest will make things right for the person being purified before Yahweh.”

This is the regulation for someone who has a skin disease but cannot afford the usual sacrifice for their purification.

Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

“When you enter the land of Canaan, which I am giving to you as your possession, and I allow a spreading mildew to appear in a house in the land you possess,

then the owner of the house must come and tell the priest, ‘It looks to me like there’s some kind of disease in the house.’

The priest will order them to empty the house before he goes in to examine the disease, so that everything in the house doesn’t become unclean. Afterward, the priest will go in to inspect the house.

He will examine the disease. If he sees that there are greenish or reddish hollow streaks in the walls of the house, and it looks deeper than the surface of the wall,

then the priest will go out of the house to the entrance and seal up the house for seven days.

The priest will return on the seventh day to inspect it. If the mold has spread on the walls of the house,

then the priest will order them to remove the stones that have the mold and throw them in an unclean place outside the city.

He will have the inside of the house scraped completely, and they will pour the scraped-off plaster outside the city into an unclean place.

They will take other stones and put them in place of the old ones; and he will take new mortar and plaster the house.

If the mold reappears and breaks out in the house after he has removed the stones, scraped the house, and plastered it,

then the priest will come in and inspect it. If the mold has spread in the house, it is a destructive mildew in the house. It is unclean.

He will tear down the house—its stones, its timber, and all its plaster. He will carry them out of the city to an unclean place.

Furthermore, anyone who enters the house while it is closed up will be unclean until the evening.

Anyone who sleeps in the house must wash their clothes; and anyone who eats in the house must wash their clothes.

If the priest comes in and examines it, and sees that the mold has not spread in the house after it was plastered, then the priest will declare the house clean, because the mold is healed.

To cleanse the house, he will take two birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop.

He will kill one of the birds in a clay pot over running water.

He will take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet yarn, and the live bird, and dip them in the blood of the killed bird and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times.

He will cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, the running water, the live bird, the cedar wood, the hyssop, and the scarlet yarn.

But he will let the live bird go free outside the city into the open field. This is how he will make atonement for the house, and it will be clean.”

“This is the law for any skin disease like leprosy, for an itch,

for destructive mildew on clothing, and for a house,

and for a swelling, a scab, and a bright spot,

to teach when something is unclean and when it is clean. This is the law concerning leprosy.”
