Leviticus

Chapter 15

How to live close to a holy God.

Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,

"Speak to the people of Israel and tell them, 'When a man has a bodily discharge, he is unclean because of it.

This is how his discharge makes him unclean: whether his body continually leaks the discharge or stops leaking it, he is unclean.

Every bed where a man with a discharge lies will be unclean; and everything he sits on will be unclean.

Anyone who touches his bed must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening.

Anyone who sits on anything where the man with a discharge sat must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening.

Anyone who touches the body of the man with the discharge must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening.

If the man with a discharge spits on someone who is clean, that person must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening.

Any saddle the man with a discharge rides on will be unclean.

Anyone who touches anything that was under him will be unclean until evening. The person who carries those things must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening.

If the man with a discharge touches someone without having rinsed his hands in water, that person must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening.

An earthenware pot that the man with a discharge touches must be broken; and every wooden container must be rinsed with water.

When a man with a discharge becomes clean from his discharge, he must count seven days for his cleansing, wash his clothes, and bathe his body in running water; then he will be clean.

On the eighth day, he must take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and come before Yahweh at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the priest.

The priest will offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering. The priest will perform the purification rite for him before Yahweh for his discharge.

If any man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body in water and be unclean until evening.

Every garment and every piece of leather that has semen on it must be washed with water and be unclean until evening.

If a man has sexual intercourse with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both of them must bathe in water and be unclean until evening.

If a woman has a discharge, and her discharge is blood, she will be in her menstrual impurity for seven days; and anyone who touches her will be unclean until evening.

Everything she lies on during her menstrual impurity will be unclean. Also, everything she sits on will be unclean.

Anyone who touches her bed must wash his clothes, bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening."

Whoever touches anything she sits on must wash his clothes, bathe himself in water, and remain unclean until the evening.

If the unclean person touches his bed or anything she sits on, he will be unclean until evening.

“If any man has sex with her and her monthly period is on him, he will be unclean for seven days, and any bed he lies on will also be unclean.

“If a woman has a discharge of blood for many days at a time other than her regular period, or if her discharge continues beyond her regular period, she will be unclean for as long as the discharge lasts, just as during her period.

Every bed she lies on during all the days of her discharge will be like her bed during her period, and everything she sits on will be unclean, just as it is during her period.

Anyone who touches these things will be unclean, and must wash his clothes, bathe himself in water, and remain unclean until evening.

“But if she becomes clean from her discharge, she must count seven days, and after that she will be clean.

On the eighth day, she must take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.

The priest will offer one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering, and in this way, the priest will make atonement for her before Yahweh for the uncleanness of her discharge.

“This is how you are to keep the people of Israel separate from their uncleanness, so that they will not die because they defile my Tabernacle that is among them.”

This is the regulation for anyone who has a discharge, and for anyone who has an emission of semen and becomes unclean by it;

it also applies to a woman during her period, and to a man or woman who has a discharge, and to a man who has sex with an unclean woman.
