Joshua

Chapter 14

God gives His people a home.

These are the territories that the people of Israel received in the land of Canaan. Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the family groups from the tribes of Israel distributed these shares to them.

They assigned the land by drawing lots, as Yahweh had commanded through Moses, for the nine tribes and the half-tribe.

Moses had already given territories to the two tribes and the half-tribe on the other side of the Jordan River; but he did not give any territory among them to the Levites.

This is because Joseph's descendants formed two tribes: Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites did not receive any part of the land, except for cities to live in, with surrounding pasture lands for their livestock and possessions.

The people of Israel followed Yahweh's command to Moses, and they divided the land.

Then the people of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal. Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to Joshua, "You know what Yahweh, the man of God, said to Moses about you and me in Kadesh Barnea."

I was forty years old when Moses, Yahweh's servant, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. I brought back a report that was true to my heart.

Even so, my brothers who went with me made the people lose courage; but I completely followed Yahweh my God.

Moses swore that day, saying, 'The land where you walked will certainly be an inheritance for you and your children forever, because you completely followed Yahweh my God.'

"Now look, Yahweh has kept me alive, as he promised, for these forty-five years since he spoke that word to Moses, while Israel wandered in the wilderness. Now I am eighty-five years old today.

I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me. My strength for war, for going out and coming in, is the same now as it was then.

So now, give me this hill country that Yahweh spoke about that day. You heard that day that the Anakim were there, and also large, fortified cities. Maybe Yahweh will be with me, and I will drive them out, just as Yahweh said."

Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his inheritance.

That is why Hebron has been the inheritance of Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholeheartedly followed Yahweh, the God of Israel.

The previous name of Hebron was Kiriath Arba, named after the greatest man among the Anakim. After this, the land had rest from war.
