Joshua

Chapter 13

God gives His people a home.

Joshua was now old and very advanced in years. Yahweh said to him, "You are old and advanced in years, and there is still a large amount of land left to be taken.

This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and all the Geshurites;

from the Shihor River, which is east of Egypt, up to the northern border of Ekron, which is considered Canaanite territory. This includes the five rulers of the Philistines: the people of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron; also the Avvim people;

on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;

and the land of the Gebalites, and all of Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath;

all the people living in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, including all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Just divide this land among Israel as their inheritance, just as I have commanded you.

Now therefore, divide this land as an inheritance for the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh."

Besides these, the Reubenites and the Gadites had already received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, on the east side of the Jordan River, just as Moses, the servant of Yahweh, gave it to them:

from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, including the city in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeba as far as Dibon;

and all the cities of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, up to the border of the people of Ammon;

and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah;

all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei (he was among the last remaining Rephaim); for Moses attacked these kings and drove them out.

However, the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites; instead, Geshur and Maacath live among Israel to this day.

Only the tribe of Levi was not given an inheritance. The offerings made by fire to Yahweh, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, as he told them.

Moses gave land to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their family groups.

Their territory started from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Valley, and included the city in the middle of the valley, and all the plain near Medeba;

Heshbon, and all its cities that are on the plain; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon,

Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,

Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth Shahar in the mountain of the valley,

Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, Beth Jeshimoth,

all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon. Moses had defeated Sihon along with the chiefs of Midian: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, who were princes of Sihon living in that land.

The Israelites also killed Balaam, son of Beor, the fortune-teller, with the sword, among the other people they killed.

The border of the Reubenites was the bank of the Jordan River. This was the inheritance of the Reubenites according to their family groups, with their cities and their villages.

Moses gave land to the tribe of Gad, to the Gadites, according to their family groups.

Their territory included Jazer, all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, up to Aroer, which is near Rabbah;

and from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;

and in the valley, Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, and Zaphon, which was the rest of the kingdom of Sihon, king of Heshbon, extending to the bank of the Jordan River, to the farthest part of the Sea of Chinnereth, beyond the Jordan to the east.

This was the inheritance of the Gadites according to their family groups, including their cities and their villages.

Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was for the half-tribe of the Manassites according to their family groups.

Their territory stretched from Mahanaim, including all of Bashan, all the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan, and all the sixty villages of Jair that are in Bashan.

The half of Gilead, along with Ashtaroth and Edrei, which were cities in King Og's kingdom in Bashan, were given to the families of Machir, Manasseh's son, specifically to half of Machir's descendants.

These are the territories that Moses distributed on the plains of Moab, east of the Jordan River near Jericho.

However, Moses did not give any territory to the tribe of Levi. Yahweh, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, just as he told them.
