“I have told you these things so that you will not stumble.
They will expel you from the synagogues. Indeed, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.
They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me.
But I have told you these things so that when their time comes, you will remember that I warned you about them. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning because I was still with you.
But now I am going to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
Instead, because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your hearts.
However, I tell you the truth: it is better for you that I go away. Because if I don’t go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
When he comes, he will convince the world about sin, about righteousness, and about judgment:
about sin, because they do not believe in me;
about righteousness, because I am going to my Father, and you will no longer see me;
about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
“I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot handle them now.
However, when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own, but will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will bring glory to me because he will take what is mine and tell it to you.
Everything the Father has is mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take what is mine and tell it to you.”
In a little while you won't see me. Then, after another little while, you will see me again.
Some of his followers asked each other, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you won't see me, and then again, after a little while, you will see me'? And what does he mean by 'Because I am going to the Father'?
So they asked, "What is 'a little while'? We don't understand what he's talking about."
Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you asking each other about what I said: 'In a little while you won't see me, and then again, after a little while, you will see me'?
I tell you the truth, you will cry and be sad, but the world will be happy. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
When a woman is giving birth, she is in pain because her time has come. But after the baby is born, she no longer remembers the pain, because of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.
So you are sad now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with joy, and no one will ever take that joy away from you.
On that day, you will not need to ask me any questions. I tell you the truth, whatever you ask the Father for in my name, he will give it to you.
Up until now, you haven't asked for anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
I have told you these things using figures of speech. But the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
On that day you will ask in my name; and I'm not saying that I will ask the Father for you,
because the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I came from the Father and entered the world. Now I am leaving the world again and going back to the Father.
His followers said to him, 'Look, now you are speaking clearly and not using figures of speech.
Now we know that you know everything and don't need anyone to ask you questions. Because of this, we believe that you came from God.'
Jesus answered them, 'Do you believe now?'
Listen, the time is coming, in fact, it is already here, when you will all be scattered, each going your own way, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
I have told you these things so that you may have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble; but be brave! I have overcome the world.
