“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
He cuts off every branch in me that does not produce fruit. He prunes every branch that does produce fruit so it will produce even more.
You are already clean because of the message I have spoken to you.
Remain united with me, and I will remain united with you. A branch cannot produce fruit by itself; it must remain attached to the vine. In the same way, you cannot produce fruit unless you remain united with me.
I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains united with me, and I with him, will produce much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.
If anyone does not remain united with me, he is thrown out like a useless branch and withers. People gather such branches, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.
If you remain united with me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be given to you.
My Father is honored when you produce much fruit and show that you are my followers.
Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.
If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.
I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.
This is my command: Love one another, just as I have loved you.
No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you servants, because a servant doesn’t know what his master is doing. Instead, I have called you friends, for I have told you everything I heard from my Father.
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.
I command these things to you, so that you may love one another.
If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me before it hated you.
If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. But because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, that is why the world hates you.
Remember the statement I made to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my teaching, they will also obey yours.
They will do all these things to you because of my name, since they do not know the one who sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin.
Anyone who hates me also hates my Father.
If I had not done works among them that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
This happened to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me for no reason.’
“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth, who comes from the Father—he will speak about me.
You will also speak about me, because you have been with me from the beginning.
