Ezekiel

Chapter 40

Wild visions of God's glory.

In the twenty-fifth year of our captivity, on the tenth day of the first month, which was the fourteenth year after the city was conquered, on that very day, the power of Yahweh came upon me, and he brought me there.

In visions from God, he brought me to the land of Israel and set me down on a very high mountain. On its southern side, there was what looked like the structure of a city.

He brought me there, and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like bronze. He had a linen measuring cord and a measuring rod in his hand, and he was standing in the gate.

The man told me, "Son of man, pay close attention with your eyes and ears, and consider everything I am about to show you. I brought you here specifically to show you these things. Now, tell the people of Israel everything you see."

I saw a wall around the outside of the temple. The man was holding a measuring rod that was six ordinary cubits plus a handbreadth long. He measured the building's thickness and height, and both were one rod.

Then he went to the gate that faced east and climbed its stairs. He measured the first threshold of the gate, and it was one rod wide. He measured the second threshold of the gate, and it was also one rod wide.

Each guard room was one rod long and one rod wide. There were five cubits between the guard rooms. The threshold of the gate, by the porch leading into the temple, was one rod.

He also measured the porch of the gate leading into the temple, and it was one rod.

Then he measured the porch of the gate, which was eight cubits, and its two support posts, which were two cubits each. This porch of the gate led into the temple.

The guard rooms on the east gate were three on one side and three on the other side. All three were the same size, and the support posts on both sides were also the same size.

He measured the width of the gate opening as ten cubits and the length of the gate as thirteen cubits.

There was a border one cubit wide in front of the guard rooms on both sides. The guard rooms themselves were six cubits long on both sides.

He measured the gate from the roof of one guard room to the roof of the other, and it was twenty-five cubits wide, with doors facing each other.

He also made support posts that were sixty cubits high. The courtyard extended all the way to these posts, surrounding the gate.

From the front of the gate entrance to the front of the inner porch of the gate was fifty cubits.

The guard rooms had windows that could be closed. There were windows around the inside of the gate's support posts and arches. Inside, there were also windows all around, and palm tree carvings were on each post.

Then he brought me into the outer courtyard. I saw rooms and a paved area all around the courtyard. There were thirty rooms on this paved area.

This paved area was next to the gates, and its length matched the length of the gates; it was the lower paved area.

Then he measured the distance from the front of the lower gate to the front of the inner courtyard. It was one hundred cubits, both on the east side and on the north side.

He measured the length and width of the gate of the outer courtyard that faced north.

Its guard rooms were three on one side and three on the other. Its support posts and arches were the same size as those of the first gate. Its length was fifty cubits, and its width twenty-five cubits.

Its windows, arches, and palm tree carvings were the same as those of the gate facing east. People went up to it by seven steps, and its arches were in front of them.

There was a gate leading to the inner courtyard that faced the other gate, both on the north and on the east. He measured one hundred cubits from gate to gate.

He led me south, and I saw a gate facing south. He measured its posts and its arched entryways, and they were the same measurements as before.

There were windows in the gate and in its arched entryways all around, just like the other windows. Its length was 50 cubits, and its width was 25 cubits.

There were seven steps leading up to it, and its arched entryways were in front of them. It also had palm trees carved on its posts, one on each side.

There was a gate to the inner courtyard on the south side. He measured 100 cubits from one gate to the other on the south.

Then he brought me through the south gate to the inner courtyard. He measured the south gate, and it had the same measurements as the others.

Its guardrooms, posts, and arched entryways had the same measurements. There were windows in it and in its arched entryways all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide.

There were arched entryways all around, 25 cubits long and 5 cubits wide.

Its arched entryways faced the outer courtyard. There were palm trees on its posts, and it had eight steps leading up to it.

He brought me into the inner courtyard through the east gate. He measured the gate, and it had the same measurements as the others.

Its guardrooms, posts, and arched entryways had the same measurements. There were windows in it and in its arched entryways all around. It was 50 cubits long and 25 cubits wide.

Its arched entryways faced the outer courtyard. There were palm trees on its posts, one on each side, and it had eight steps leading up to it.

He brought me to the north gate. He measured it, and it had the same measurements as the others.

Its guardrooms, posts, and arched entryways all had windows all around. Its length was 50 cubits and its width was 25 cubits.

Its posts faced the outer courtyard. There were palm trees on its posts, one on each side, and it had eight steps leading up to it.

A room with a door was next to the posts at the gates. This is where they washed the animals for the burnt offering.

In the porch of the gate, there were two tables on one side and two tables on the other. On these tables, they slaughtered the animals for the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering.

On the outside, as someone went up to the north gate entry, there were two tables on one side. On the other side, within the gate's porch, there were two more tables.

So there were four tables on one side and four tables on the other side, next to the gate, making a total of eight tables where they slaughtered the sacrifices.

There were four tables for the burnt offering made of cut stone, each one and a half cubits long, one and a half cubits wide, and one cubit high. On these tables, they placed the tools used to slaughter the burnt offering and the sacrifice.

Hooks, a hand width long, were fastened all around on the inside. The meat of the offering was placed on the tables.

Outside the inner gate, there were rooms for the singers in the inner courtyard. These rooms were next to the north gate and faced south. There was another room next to the east gate that faced north.

He told me, "This room, which faces south, is for the priests who are in charge of caring for the temple."

"And the room that faces north is for the priests who are in charge of caring for the altar. These are the descendants of Zadok, who, from among the Levites, come near to Yahweh to serve him."

He measured the courtyard; it was 100 cubits long and 100 cubits wide, a perfect square. The altar was in front of the temple.

Then he brought me to the porch of the temple. He measured each post of the porch: five cubits on one side and five cubits on the other side. The width of the gate was three cubits on one side and three cubits on the other.

The porch was 20 cubits long and 11 cubits wide, including the steps that led up to it. There were pillars next to the posts, one on each side.
