Ezekiel

Chapter 31

Wild visions of God's glory.

On the first day of the third month in the eleventh year, the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

“Son of man, tell Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and his large army, ‘Who are you like in your greatness?’

“Look, Assyria was like a cedar in Lebanon with beautiful branches, providing forest-like shade, and it grew very tall, its top reaching into the thickest boughs.

Water nourished it; the deep made it grow. Its rivers flowed all around its roots, and it sent out its channels to all the trees of the field.

Because of this, it grew taller than all the other trees of the field. Its branches multiplied, and its limbs grew long because of the abundant water when it spread them out.

All the birds of the sky nested in its branches, and under its limbs all the wild animals gave birth to their young. All great nations lived in its shadow.

So it was beautiful in its greatness and in the length of its branches, because its roots were by abundant water.

The cedars in the garden of God could not hide it. The cypress trees were not like its branches, and the pine trees were not like its limbs. No tree in the garden of God was as beautiful as it was.

I made it beautiful with its many branches, so all the trees of Eden in the garden of God envied it.”

Therefore, the Lord Yahweh said this: “Because you have grown so tall, and you have set your top among the thick boughs, and because you have become arrogant due to your height,

I will hand him over to the powerful leader of the nations; he will surely deal with him. I have driven him out because of his wickedness.

Foreigners, the most fearsome of nations, have cut him down and left him. His branches have fallen on the mountains and in all the valleys. His boughs are broken by all the streams of the land. All the people of the earth have left his shade.

All the birds of the sky will live among his ruins, and all the wild animals will be on his branches.

This is so that no trees by the waters will become proud of their height, or set their tops among the thick branches. No mighty trees that drink water should stand tall because of their height, for they are all destined to die and go to the underworld, among humans, with those who go into the pit.

The Lord Yahweh says: On the day he went down to the grave, I caused a mourning. I covered the deep sea for him and stopped its rivers. The great waters were held back. I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field became weak because of him.

I made the nations shake at the sound of his fall, when I threw him down to the grave with those who go into the pit. Then all the trees of Eden, the choicest and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, found comfort in the lowest parts of the earth.

They also went down with him to the grave, to those killed by the sword. Yes, those who were his strength, who lived under his shadow among the nations.

To whom are you so similar in glory and greatness among the trees of Eden? Yet you will be brought down with the trees of Eden to the lowest parts of the earth. You will lie among the uncircumcised, with those killed by the sword. This is about Pharaoh and all his multitude, says the Lord Yahweh.
