Exodus

Chapter 28

God rescues His people from slavery.

“Bring your brother Aaron and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, from among the people of Israel to you, so that he may serve me as a priest.

You must make special clothes for your brother Aaron that are sacred and beautiful.

Speak to all the skilled craftsmen, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, so that they can make Aaron’s clothes to set him apart for his priestly service to me.

These are the clothes they must make: a chest plate, an ephod, a robe, a tunic of checker work, a turban, and a sash. They must make these sacred clothes for your brother Aaron and his sons so that they can serve me as priests.

They will use gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen.

“They are to make the ephod from gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen, skillfully woven.

It will have two shoulder straps attached to its two ends, so it can be joined together.

The skillfully woven band on the ephod, which is worn on the person, will be made in the same way and from the same materials: gold, blue, purple, scarlet, and fine twisted linen.

You must take two onyx stones and engrave the names of the people of Israel on them:

six of their names on one stone, and the names of the other six on the second stone, in the order of their birth.

Using the skill of a jeweler, like the engraving on a seal, you must engrave the names of the sons of Israel on two stones. You must then mount these stones in gold settings.

You are to place the two stones on the shoulder straps of the ephod, so they will serve as a reminder of the sons of Israel. Aaron will carry their names before Yahweh on his two shoulders as a memorial.

You must make gold settings,

and two chains of pure gold, made like braided cords. You must attach these braided chains to the settings.

“You must make a breastplate for judgment, crafted by a skilled artisan. You are to make it like the ephod, using gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine twisted linen.

It is to be square and folded in half, nine inches long and nine inches wide.

You must set four rows of precious stones in it: the first row will be ruby, topaz, and beryl;

The second row had a turquoise, a sapphire, and an emerald.

The third row had a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst.

The fourth row had a chrysolite, an onyx, and a jasper. These stones must be set in gold.

The stones will represent the twelve sons of Israel, with each stone engraved with the name of one son, like a seal, to represent the twelve tribes.

You must make chains for the breastplate, like braided cords of pure gold.

You must make two gold rings for the breastplate and put them on its two upper corners.

You must put the two braided gold chains into these two rings at the corners of the breastplate.

You must attach the other two ends of the braided chains to the two gold settings and fasten them to the shoulder straps of the ephod on the front.

You must make two more gold rings and put them on the two lower corners of the breastplate, on the inside edge toward the ephod.

You must make two more gold rings and put them on the two shoulder straps of the ephod underneath, at the front, near where it connects, above the decorative band of the ephod.

The breastplate must be tied to the ephod by its rings with a blue cord, so it rests on the decorative band of the ephod and does not come loose from the ephod.

When Aaron goes into the holy place, he will carry the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgment over his heart, as a constant reminder before Yahweh.

You must put the Urim and the Thummim into the breastplate of judgment. They will be over Aaron’s heart when he goes before Yahweh, so Aaron will continually carry the judgment for the sons of Israel over his heart before Yahweh.

"You must make the robe for the ephod entirely of blue cloth.

It will have a hole in the middle for the head. The edge of this hole will be reinforced with woven trim, like the collar of a protective shirt, so it doesn't tear.

Around the bottom edge of the robe, you must make pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, with gold bells in between them all around the hem.

There will be a gold bell and a pomegranate, then a gold bell and a pomegranate, all around the hem of the robe.

Aaron must wear this robe when he serves. Its sound will be heard when he goes into the holy place before Yahweh and when he comes out, so he will not die.

"You must make a pure gold plate and engrave on it, like an engraving on a seal, 'HOLY TO YAHWEH.'

You must attach it to a blue cord and fasten it to the turban; it must be on the front of the turban."

It will be on Aaron’s forehead. This way, Aaron will take responsibility for any mistakes made with the holy gifts that the people of Israel dedicate. It must always be on his forehead so that these gifts will be accepted by Yahweh.

You are to weave the robe with a checkered pattern out of fine linen. You will make a turban of fine linen and an embroidered sash.

“You must make robes for Aaron’s sons, along with sashes and headbands for them, for glory and for beauty.

You are to put these on your brother Aaron and his sons. Then you must anoint them, consecrate them, and set them apart, so they can serve me as priests.

You are to make them linen shorts to cover their nakedness; these shorts must reach from their waist to their thighs.

Aaron and his sons must wear these shorts when they enter the Tent of Meeting or when they approach the altar to serve in the holy place. This is so they won't be held guilty and die. This is a permanent rule for him and for his descendants.
