Amos

Chapter 3

Justice and honesty matter to God.

Hear this message that Yahweh has spoken against you, people of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt, saying:

“I have only chosen you out of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all your sins.”

Do two people walk together, unless they have agreed to?

Will a lion roar in the forest, when it has no prey? Does a young lion growl from its den, if it hasn't caught anything?

Can a bird fall into a trap on the ground, where no snare is set for it? Does a trap spring up from the ground, when there is nothing to catch?

Does the alarm trumpet sound in a city, without the people being afraid? Does disaster happen to a city, and Yahweh hasn’t caused it?

Surely the Lord Yahweh will do nothing, unless he reveals his plan to his servants the prophets.

The lion has roared. Who will not be afraid? The Lord Yahweh has spoken. Who can help but prophesy?

Announce in the palaces of Ashdod and in the palaces of Egypt, and say, “Gather on the mountains of Samaria and see how much trouble and oppression there is among them.”

Yahweh says, “They don’t know how to do what is right. They store up stolen goods and loot in their palaces.”

So the Lord Yahweh says, “An enemy will invade the land; he will tear down your strongholds, and your fortresses will be robbed.”

Yahweh says, “Just as a shepherd rescues only two leg bones or a piece of an ear from the mouth of a lion, so will the people of Israel be rescued who are lounging in Samaria on the corner of a couch and on the fancy cushions of a bed.”

“Listen, and testify against the family of Jacob,” says the Lord Yahweh, the God of Armies.

“On the day I punish Israel for their sins, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be broken off and fall to the ground.”

“I will destroy both the winter house and the summer house; the houses decorated with ivory will be ruined, and the great houses will come to an end,” says Yahweh.
