Amos

Chapter 4

Justice and honesty matter to God.

Listen to this message, you powerful women of Samaria, who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who tell your husbands, “Bring us drinks!”

The Lord Yahweh has promised by his holiness, “Surely the day will come when they will take you away with hooks, even the last of you with fish hooks.”

“You will go out through the breaks in the wall, each one straight ahead, and you will be thrown into Harmon,” says Yahweh.

“Go to Bethel and sin! Go to Gilgal and sin even more! Bring your sacrifices every morning and your tithes every three days.

Offer sacrifices of thanksgiving with leavened bread, and loudly proclaim your freewill offerings and boast about them! For you Israelites love to do this,” says the Lord Yahweh.

“I also gave you clean teeth in all your cities and a lack of bread in every town, yet you did not return to me,” says Yahweh.

“I also held back the rain from you three months before harvest. I made it rain on one city but not on another. One area received rain while the part that didn’t wither.”

“So two or three cities stumbled to one city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you have not returned to me,” says Yahweh.

“Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig trees and olive trees; yet you have not returned to me,” says Yahweh.

“I sent plagues among you like I did in Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword and took away your horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp; yet you have not returned to me,” says Yahweh.

“I overthrew some of you, just as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a burning stick snatched from the fire; yet you have not returned to me,” says Yahweh.

“Therefore, this is what I will do to you, Israel. Because I am doing this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel.”

“For behold, the one who forms the mountains and creates the wind, who reveals his thoughts to humanity, who turns morning into darkness and walks on the high places of the earth — Yahweh, the God of Armies, is his name.”
