Chapter 25

Israel's family story retold.

1David and the army commanders set aside some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun for service. Their job was to prophesy using harps, other stringed instruments, and cymbals. The number of people doing this work, according to their duties, was:

2From the sons of Asaph: Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah. Asaph's sons were led by Asaph, who prophesied as the king commanded.

3From Jeduthun: His sons were Gedaliah, Zeri, Jeshaiah, Shimei, Hashabiah, and Mattithiah—six in all. They were led by their father Jeduthun, who prophesied by giving thanks and praising Yahweh with the harp.

4From Heman: His sons were Bukkiah, Mattaniah, Uzziel, Shebuel, Jerimoth, Hananiah, Hanani, Eliathah, Giddalti, Romamti-Ezer, Joshbekashah, Mallothi, Hothir, and Mahazioth.

5All these were the sons of Heman, the king's seer, who spoke God's words and helped to honor Him. God gave Heman fourteen sons and three daughters.

6All these were under their father's direction for singing in Yahweh's house, using cymbals, stringed instruments, and harps, for the service of God's house. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman followed the king's orders.

7The total number of them, including their relatives who were trained in singing for Yahweh, all of whom were skilled, was 288.
