Chronicles

Chapter 24

Israel's family story retold.

These were the groups of Aaron's descendants: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

However, Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children. Therefore, Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests.

David, along with Zadok (from Eleazar's descendants) and Ahimelech (from Ithamar's descendants), organized them for their service.

More leaders were found among the descendants of Eleazar than among those of Ithamar. They were divided as follows: sixteen leaders from Eleazar's family groups, and eight from Ithamar's family groups.

They were divided fairly by drawing lots, because there were leaders of the sanctuary and leaders of God from both the families of Eleazar and Ithamar.

Shemaiah, the scribe and a Levite, who was the son of Nethanel, wrote their names. He did this in the presence of the king, the leaders, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the priestly and Levite families. One family group was chosen for Eleazar, and one for Ithamar.

The first lot came out for Jehoiarib, the second for Jedaiah,

the third for Harim, the fourth for Seorim,

the fifth for Malchijah, the sixth for Mijamin,

The seventh went to Hakkoz, and the eighth to Abijah.

The ninth went to Jeshua, and the tenth to Shecaniah.

The eleventh went to Eliashib, and the twelfth to Jakim.

The thirteenth went to Huppah, and the fourteenth to Jeshebeab.

The fifteenth went to Bilgah, and the sixteenth to Immer.

The seventeenth went to Hezir, and the eighteenth to Happizzez.

The nineteenth went to Pethahiah, and the twentieth to Jehezkel.

The twenty-first went to Jachin, and the twenty-second to Gamul.

The twenty-third went to Delaiah, and the twenty-fourth went to Maaziah.

This was the order for their service, so they could enter Yahweh’s house based on the instructions given to them by their ancestor Aaron, just as Yahweh, the God of Israel, had commanded him.

Of the remaining sons of Levi: from the sons of Amram, there was Shubael; and from the sons of Shubael, there was Jehdeiah.

From Rehabiah: from the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah was the chief.

From the Izharites, there was Shelomoth; and from the sons of Shelomoth, there was Jahath.

The sons of Hebron were Jeriah, Amariah who was second, Jahaziel who was third, and Jekameam who was fourth.

The sons of Uzziel: Micah; from the sons of Micah, there was Shamir.

Micah's brother was Isshiah; from the sons of Isshiah, there was Zechariah.

The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The son of Jaaziah was Beno.

The sons of Merari: from Jaaziah, there were Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri.

From Mahli, there was Eleazar, who had no sons.

From Kish, the son of Kish, there was Jerahmeel.

The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites, listed by their family groups.

They also cast lots, just like their relatives, the sons of Aaron, in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the leaders of the priestly and Levite families. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest brother.
