Song of Solomon

Chapter 2

A poem about love.

I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys.

Just as a lily stands out among thorns, so my love stands out among other young women.

Like an apple tree among the trees in the woods, so is my beloved among other young men. I sat down happily in his shade, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.

He brought me to his banquet hall, and his banner over me was love.

Give me strength with raisins, refresh me with apples, because I am weak from love.

His left hand is under my head, and his right hand holds me close.

I plead with you, women of Jerusalem, by the gazelles or by the wild deer, do not stir up or awaken love until it is ready.

That’s the voice of my beloved! Look, he is coming, leaping over the mountains, skipping over the hills.

My beloved is like a gazelle or a young deer. Look, he is standing behind our wall! He is looking through the windows, glancing through the lattice.

My beloved spoke and said to me, “Get up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.

Because, look, winter is over. The rain has stopped and gone away.

Flowers are appearing on the earth. The time for singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.

The fig tree is ripening its green figs. The grapevines are in blossom; they are giving off their fragrance. Get up, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.”

My dove, in the cracks of the rock, in the hidden places on the mountainside, let me see your face. Let me hear your voice, because your voice is sweet, and your face is lovely.

Catch the foxes for us, the little foxes that are ruining the vineyards, because our vineyards are in blossom.

My beloved is mine, and I am his. He feeds among the lilies.

Until the day is cool and the shadows disappear, turn, my beloved, and be like a gazelle or a young deer on the mountains of Bether.
