Revelation

Chapter 9

How the story ends — and begins.

The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the opening of the abyss.

It opened the abyss, and smoke billowed out of it like the smoke from a large furnace. The sun and the air became dark from the smoke of the abyss.

Out of the smoke, locusts came onto the earth, and they were given power like the power that scorpions on the earth have.

They were told not to harm the grass of the earth, any green thing, or any tree, but only those people who did not have God's seal on their foreheads.

They were not allowed to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. The pain they inflicted was like the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a person.

In those days, people will try to find death but will not succeed. They will long to die, but death will escape them.

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads were things that looked like crowns of gold, and their faces were like human faces.

They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.

They wore armor that looked like iron breastplates. The sound of their wings was like the roar of many chariots and horses rushing into battle.

They had tails and stingers like scorpions, and in their tails, they had the power to hurt people for five months.

Their king is the angel of the abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, it is Apollyon.

The first disaster is over. Look, two more disasters are still coming.

The sixth angel blew his trumpet. I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that stands before God.

telling the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are held at the great river Euphrates!”

The four angels were released. They had been prepared for that exact hour, day, month, and year to kill one-third of all people.

The number of cavalry soldiers was two hundred million. I heard how many there were.

This is how I saw the horses and their riders in the vision: The riders had breastplates that were fiery red, dark blue, and sulfur yellow. The horses' heads looked like lions' heads, and fire, smoke, and sulfur came out of their mouths.

One-third of humanity was killed by these three plagues: by the fire, smoke, and sulfur that came out of the horses' mouths.

The horses' power is in their mouths and in their tails. Their tails are like snakes with heads, and they use them to cause harm.

The rest of humanity, who were not killed by these plagues, still did not turn away from the evil things they had done. They continued to worship demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see, hear, or walk.

They did not turn away from their murders, their witchcraft, their sexual sins, or their stealing.
