Chapter 81

Songs and prayers for every feeling.

For the Chief Musician. On an instrument of Gath. By Asaph. Sing loudly to God, our strength! Shout for joy to the God of Jacob!

Start a song, and bring the tambourine, the pleasant lyre, and the harp.

Blow the ram's horn at the New Moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.

For this is a rule for Israel, a command from the God of Jacob.

He established it as a reminder for Joseph when he went through the land of Egypt. I heard a language I didn't understand.

He said, “I removed the burden from his shoulders. His hands were freed from the basket.

When you were in trouble, you called, and I rescued you. I answered you where thunder hides. I tested you at the waters of Meribah.” Selah.

He said, “Listen, my people, and I will warn you, Israel, if you would only listen to me!

You must not have any foreign god among you, nor worship any foreign god.

I am Yahweh, your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.

But my people didn’t listen to me. Israel didn’t want me.

So I let them follow their stubborn hearts, so they would live by their own plans.

Oh, if only my people would listen to me, if only Israel would follow my ways!

I would quickly defeat their enemies and move against their attackers.

Those who hated Yahweh would bow down in fear before him, and their punishment would last forever.

But he would have fed them with the best wheat. I will satisfy you with honey from the rock.
