Proverbs

Chapter 9

Wisdom for everyday life.

Wisdom has built her house. She has carved out her seven pillars.

She has prepared her food. She has mixed her wine. She has also set her table.

She has sent out her young women. She calls from the highest places of the city:

"Whoever is inexperienced, let them come in here!" To those who lack understanding, she says,

"Come, eat some of my bread, drink some of the wine I have mixed!"

Stop your naive ways and live. Follow the path of understanding.

Anyone who corrects a disrespectful person will be insulted. Anyone who criticizes a wicked person will be abused.

Do not criticize a mocker, or they will hate you. Criticize a wise person, and they will love you.

Teach a wise person, and they will become even wiser. Instruct a righteous person, and they will learn more.

Respect for Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom. Knowing the Holy One brings understanding.

Because of me, your days will be many, and the years of your life will be increased.

If you are wise, your wisdom benefits you. If you mock, you alone will suffer the consequences.

The foolish woman is noisy, uncontrolled, and knows nothing.

She sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the highest parts of the city,

To call out to those who are passing by, who are going about their business,

She says to anyone who is simple, 'Come in here!' And to anyone who lacks understanding, she says,

'Stolen water tastes sweet. Food eaten in secret is delicious.'

But that person doesn't know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of the grave.
