Chapter 30

Israel's long journey through the desert.

Moses spoke to the leaders of the tribes of Israel, saying, "This is what Yahweh has commanded.

When a man makes a vow to Yahweh, or swears an oath that commits him to something, he must not break his word. He must do everything he promised.

Also, when a young woman living in her father's house makes a vow to Yahweh and commits herself to something,

and her father hears about her vow and the commitment she has made, and he says nothing to her, then all her vows and every commitment she has made will stand.

But if her father forbids her on the day he hears about it, then none of her vows or commitments will stand. Yahweh will forgive her, because her father has forbidden her.

If she marries while her vows or thoughtless promises that commit her are still in effect,

and her husband hears about it and says nothing to her on the day he hears it, then her vows and commitments will stand.

But if her husband forbids her on the day he hears it, then he will cancel the vow she made and the thoughtless promise that committed her. Yahweh will forgive her.

But a vow made by a widow or a divorced woman, and every commitment she has made, will stand against her.

If she made a vow in her husband's house, or committed herself by an oath,

and her husband heard it and said nothing to her and did not prevent her, then all her vows and every commitment she made will stand.

But if her husband canceled them on the day he heard them, then nothing she said in her vows or regarding her commitment will stand. Her husband has canceled them, and Yahweh will forgive her.

Every vow and every binding oath that causes her hardship, her husband can confirm it or her husband can cancel it.

But if her husband remains completely silent about her day after day, then he confirms all her vows or all her commitments that are on her. He confirms them because he said nothing to her on the day he heard them.

But if he cancels them after he has heard them, then he will be responsible for her guilt."

These are the rules Yahweh commanded Moses concerning a man and his wife, and a father and his young daughter living in his house.
