1The leaders of the people lived in Jerusalem. The rest of the people drew lots to decide that one out of every ten people would live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the other nine would live in the other towns.
2And the people praised everyone who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.
3These are the heads of the districts who lived in Jerusalem. But in the towns of Judah, everyone lived on their own land in their own towns: the Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon's servants.
4Some of the people from Judah and Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. From Judah: Athaiah, son of Uzziah, son of Zechariah, son of Amariah, son of Shephatiah, son of Mahalalel, from the family of Perez;
5and Maaseiah, son of Baruch, son of Colhozeh, son of Hazaiah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Zechariah, a descendant of the Shilonite.
6All the descendants of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were 468 brave men.
7These are the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu, son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah.
8After him came Gabbai and Sallai, totaling 928 men.
9Joel, son of Zichri, was their overseer, and Judah, son of Hassenuah, was second in command over the city.
10From the priests: Jedaiah, son of Joiarib; Jachin;
11Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, who was in charge of God's house.
12their relatives who worked in the Temple numbered 822. Also Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pelaliah, son of Amzi, son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah.
13His relatives, who were leaders of families, numbered 242. Also Amashsai son of Azarel, son of Ahzai, son of Meshillemoth, son of Immer.
14His relatives, who were brave warriors, numbered 128. Their supervisor was Zabdiel son of Haggedolim.
15Among the Levites were Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, son of Bunni;
16Shabbethai and Jozabad, who were leaders among the Levites, were responsible for the external duties of God’s house;
17Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zabdi, son of Asaph, was the lead singer who began the thanksgiving prayers. Bakbukiah was his second in command among his relatives. Abda son of Shammua, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun.
18All the Levites in the holy city totaled 284.
19The gatekeepers Akkub, Talmon, and their relatives, who guarded the gates, numbered 172.
20The rest of the people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, lived in all the other cities of Judah, each on his own land.
21But the temple servants lived in Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of them.
22Uzzi son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Mica, a descendant of Asaph (who were the singers), was the overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem, in charge of the affairs of God’s house.
23This was because the king had given a commandment and made a regular provision for the singers for their daily needs.
24Pethahiah son of Meshezabel, from the descendants of Zerah son of Judah, was the king’s representative for all matters concerning the people.
25As for the villages and their fields, some of the descendants of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba and its towns, in Dibon and its towns, and in Jekabzeel and its villages.
26They also lived in Jeshua, Moladah, and Beth Pelet,
27in Hazar Shual, in Beersheba and its towns,
28in Ziklag, in Meconah and its towns,
29in En Rimmon, in Zorah, and Jarmuth,
30Zanoah, Adullam, and their villages, Lachish and its fields, and Azekah and its towns. They settled in the area from Beersheba to the Valley of Hinnom.
31The descendants of Benjamin lived from Geba onward, in Michmash, Aija, Bethel, and its towns;
32in Anathoth, Nob, and Ananiah;
33Hazor, Ramah, and Gittaim;
34Hadid, Zeboim, and Neballat;
35Lod, Ono, and the Valley of Craftsmen.
36Some divisions of the Levites settled in Benjamin's territory, even though they were from Judah.
