The rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all those who had separated themselves from the foreign people of the lands to follow God's law—along with their wives, sons, and daughters, everyone who had knowledge and understanding—
joined their relatives and leaders in a sworn agreement and oath to follow God's law, which was given through Moses God's servant. They promised to obey and carry out all the commands of Yahweh our Lord, and his regulations and rules.
They also promised that they would not let their daughters marry the people of the land, nor would they let their sons marry their daughters.
We also promised that if the people from the land brought goods or grain to sell on the Sabbath or a holy day, we would not buy from them. And we agreed to let the land rest in the seventh year and to cancel all debts.
We also made rules for ourselves, agreeing to pay a third of a shekel each year for the upkeep of the house of our God.
This money would cover the show bread, the regular grain offerings, the regular burnt offerings, the offerings for Sabbaths, new moons, and special festivals, the holy gifts, and the sin offerings to make things right for Israel, and for all the other work in the house of our God.
We, the priests, the Levites, and the people, drew lots to decide when each family unit would bring a wood offering to the house of our God each year, at specific times, to burn on the altar of Yahweh our God, as the law commands.
We also promised to bring the first harvest from our land and the first fruits from every kind of tree to Yahweh's house each year.
And we committed to bringing the firstborn of our sons and our livestock, as the law states, and the firstborn of our herds and flocks to the house of our God, to the priests who serve there.
We would also bring the first portion of our dough, our special offerings, the fruit from every kind of tree, new wine, and olive oil to the priests, to the storerooms in the house of our God. And we would bring a tenth of our harvest to the Levites, because they are the ones who collect the tithes in all our farming towns.
A priest, a descendant of Aaron, must be with the Levites when they collect the tithes. And the Levites must bring a tenth of the tithes they collect to the house of our God, to the storerooms, to the treasury.
Both the people of Israel and the Levites must bring their contributions of grain, new wine, and oil to the storerooms, where the holy items are kept, and where the priests, gatekeepers, and singers serve. We will not neglect the house of our God.
