Matthew

Chapter 8

Jesus, the promised King.

When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.

Then a man with a skin disease came to him, knelt down, and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, saying, “I am willing. Be clean!” Immediately, his skin disease was cured.

Jesus told him, “Make sure you don’t tell anyone. Instead, go show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as proof to them that you are clean.”

When Jesus entered Capernaum, a Roman officer came to him and pleaded with him,

saying, “Lord, my servant is at home, paralyzed and suffering terribly.”

Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.”

The officer replied, “Lord, I am not worthy for you to come into my house. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.

For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and I tell another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and I tell my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to his followers, "I tell you the truth, I have not found such great faith anywhere, not even in Israel."

I tell you that many people will come from the east and the west and will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven.

But those who should have inherited the Kingdom will be thrown out into the darkness outside. There, people will cry and grind their teeth in pain.

Jesus said to the centurion, "Go. Because you believed, it will be done for you." And at that very moment, his servant was healed.

When Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.

He touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and began to serve him.

That evening, people brought to him many who were controlled by demons. He forced the evil spirits out with a single word and healed everyone who was sick,

This happened to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah had said: "He took away our weaknesses and carried our diseases."

When Jesus saw large crowds gathering around him, he instructed his disciples to go to the other side of the lake.

A religious teacher came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."

Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to rest his head."

Another one of his followers said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the spiritually dead bury their own dead."

When he got into a boat, his disciples followed him.

Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so strong that waves were covering the boat, but Jesus was asleep.

His disciples came and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We are about to drown!"

He said to them, "Why are you so afraid, you who have so little faith?" Then he stood up, ordered the wind and the sea to be calm, and there was a complete calm.

The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the sea obey him!"

When Jesus came to the other side of the lake, into the region of the Gergesenes, two men who were controlled by demons met him. They were coming out of the tombs and were so violent that no one could travel that road.

They shouted, "What do you want with us, Jesus, Son of God? Have you come to torture us before the appointed time?"

A large herd of pigs was feeding in the distance.

The demons begged him, "If you cast us out, send us into the herd of pigs."

He told them, "Go!" So the demons came out of the men and went into the pigs. Then the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water.

The people who were tending the pigs ran off, went into the town, and reported everything, including what had happened to the men controlled by demons.

Then the whole town came out to meet Jesus. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their area.
