1Be careful not to do your good deeds in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will receive no reward from your Father in heaven.
2So when you give to the needy, don’t announce it with trumpets, as hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets to be honored by people. I assure you, they have already received their full reward.
3But when you give to the needy, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
4so that your giving will be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly.
5When you pray, don't be like the hypocrites. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so people can see them. I assure you, they have already received their full reward.
6But when you pray, go into your private room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly.
7When you pray, don’t use a lot of meaningless words like people who don't know God do, because they think they will be heard for their many words.
8Don’t be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you even ask him.
9So pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be honored.
10May your Kingdom come. May your will be done on earth, just as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12And forgive us our sins, just as we also forgive those who sin against us.
13Don’t lead us into temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours forever. Amen.
14For if you forgive people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15But if you don’t forgive people their sins, neither will your Father forgive your sins.
16When you fast, don’t look sad like the hypocrites. They make their faces look dismal so that people will see they are fasting. I assure you, they have already received their reward in full.
17But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face,
18so that others won’t know you are fasting, but only your Father, who is unseen. And your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
19Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20Instead, store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21For where your treasure is, your heart will be also.
22Your eye is like a lamp for your body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.
23But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. And if the light within you is darkness, how great that darkness will be!
24No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or you will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon (money/possessions).
25So I tell you, don’t worry about your life—what you will eat or drink; or about your body—what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothes?
26Look at the birds in the sky. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you much more valuable than they are?
27Can any of you add a single hour to your life by worrying?
28And why do you worry about clothes? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t work or make their own clothing.
29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.
30If God so beautifully dresses the wild grass, which is alive today and thrown into the oven tomorrow, won’t he much more clothe you, you people of little faith?
31So don’t worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’
32For pagans eagerly pursue all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33But first, seek God's Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these other things will also be given to you.
34So don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will have its own worries. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
