Matthew

Chapter 28

Jesus, the promised King.

After the Sabbath, as Sunday morning began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb.

Suddenly, there was a great earthquake. An angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled away the stone from the entrance, and sat on it.

He shone like lightning, and his clothes were as white as snow.

The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel spoke to the women, "Don't be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

He isn't here; he has risen, just as he said he would. Come, see the place where the Lord was lying.

Now go quickly and tell his followers, 'He has risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you to Galilee; you will see him there.' Now you know."

The women quickly left the tomb, both frightened and filled with great joy, and ran to tell his followers.

Suddenly, Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" They came up to him, held onto his feet, and worshiped him.

Then Jesus told them, "Don't be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and they will see me there."

While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported everything that had happened to the chief priests.

The chief priests met with the elders and, after making a plan, gave a large sum of money to the soldiers.

They told them, “Say that his followers came during the night and stole his body while you were sleeping.

If the governor hears about this, we will convince him and make sure you don't get into trouble.”

So the soldiers took the money and did as they were told. This story was widely spread among the Jews and is still told today.

But the eleven followers went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had instructed them to go.

When they saw him, they worshiped him, though some still doubted.

Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."

Therefore, go and make followers of all people, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Remember, I am with you always, until the very end of the age." Amen.
