When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people met together to plan how to put Jesus to death.
They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
When Judas, who had betrayed Jesus, saw that Jesus was condemned, he felt remorse. He returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders,
saying, "I have sinned by betraying an innocent man." But they said, "What does that have to do with us? That's your problem."
He threw the silver coins into the Temple and left. Then he went and hanged himself.
The chief priests picked up the silver coins and said, "It's against the law to put this money into the temple treasury, because it's blood money."
After discussing it, they used the money to buy the Potter's Field as a burial place for foreigners.
That is why that field has been called the "Field of Blood" to this very day.
Then what the prophet Jeremiah said came true: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price at which he was valued by some of the people of Israel,
and gave them for the Potter's Field, as the Lord commanded me."
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus replied, "That's what you say."
When the chief priests and elders accused him, he didn't answer anything.
Then Pilate said to him, "Don't you hear how many accusations they are making against you?"
But Jesus gave him no answer, not even a single word, which greatly amazed the governor.
At every Passover Festival, the governor had a custom of releasing one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted.
At that time, they had a well-known prisoner named Barabbas.
So when the crowd gathered, Pilate asked them, "Whom do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called the Christ?"
He knew that the chief priests and elders had handed Jesus over to him out of envy.
While Pilate was sitting on the judge's bench, his wife sent him a message: "Have nothing to do with that innocent man, because I suffered greatly in a dream today because of him."
But the chief priests and the elders convinced the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
The governor asked them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas!"
Pilate said to them, "Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?" They all said, "Crucify him!"
But the governor asked, "Why? What crime has he committed?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify him!"
Pilate saw that he wasn't accomplishing anything, and in fact, a riot was starting. So he took some water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, "I am not responsible for the death of this innocent man. That's your problem."
All the people answered, "May his death be on us and on our children!"
Then Pilate released Barabbas to them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.
Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the entire company of soldiers around him.
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
They made a crown out of thorns and put it on his head, and a stick in his right hand. Then they knelt before him and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
They spit on him, took the stick, and hit him on the head.
After they had mocked him, they took the robe off him, put his own clothes back on him, and led him away to crucify him.
As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross.
When they came to a place called "Golgotha," which means "Place of a Skull,"
they gave him wine mixed with bitter gall to drink. But after he tasted it, he refused to drink it.
After they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots.
Then they sat down and watched him there.
Above his head, they put the written charge against him: "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.
Those who passed by insulted him, shaking their heads,
and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
In the same way, the chief priests, the teachers of the law, the Pharisees, and the elders also mocked him,
saying, "He saved others, but he can't save himself! If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
Even the robbers who were crucified with him insulted him in the same way.
From noon until three in the afternoon, darkness covered all the land.
Around three in the afternoon, Jesus shouted in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” This means, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”
Some of the people standing there heard him and said, “This man is calling for Elijah.”
Immediately, one of them ran, took a sponge, soaked it in sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.
The others said, “Leave him alone! Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
Jesus shouted again with a loud voice and then he died.
At that moment, the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks split apart.
The tombs also broke open, and many bodies of holy people who had died were raised to life.
After Jesus’ resurrection, these people came out of the tombs, went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
The Roman officer and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and everything that happened. They were terrified and said, “Truly, this man was the Son of God!”
Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee and were serving him.
Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph arrived. He was also a disciple of Jesus.
He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate ordered that the body be given to him.
Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. He then rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The next day, which was the day after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate.
They said, “Sir, we remember that this deceiver said while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise again.’”
So order the tomb to be secured until the third day. Otherwise, his followers might come at night, steal him, and tell everyone he has risen from the dead. Then the last deception would be even worse than the first.
Pilate told them, "You have a guard. Go and make the tomb as secure as you can."
So they went with the guard and secured the tomb, sealing the stone.
