Leviticus

Chapter 27

How to live close to a holy God.

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“Tell the people of Israel: ‘When someone makes a promise to Yahweh to dedicate a person, you must set a value for that person.

Your valuation for a male between twenty and sixty years old will be fifty shekels of silver, according to the standard sanctuary shekel.

If the person is female, your valuation will be thirty shekels.

If the person is between five and twenty years old, your valuation will be twenty shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female.

If the person is between one month and five years old, your valuation will be five shekels of silver for a male and three shekels of silver for a female.

If the person is sixty years old or older, your valuation will be fifteen shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female.

But if someone is too poor to pay your valuation, they must be presented to the priest, and the priest will set a value for them based on what they can afford to pay.

‘If someone brings an animal as an offering to Yahweh, any animal given to Yahweh in this way becomes holy.

You must not exchange it or substitute a good one for a bad one, or a bad one for a good one. If you swap one animal for another, both the original animal and the substitute will become holy.

If it is an unclean animal, one that is not offered to Yahweh, then it must be presented to the priest;

and the priest will assess its value, whether it is good or bad. Whatever the priest determines its value to be, that will be its worth.

But if the owner wants to buy it back, they must add one-fifth to its assessed value.

‘When someone dedicates their house to be holy to Yahweh, the priest will assess its value, whether it is good or bad. Whatever the priest decides its value is, that amount will stand.

If the one who dedicated the house wants to buy it back, they must add one-fifth to the assessed valuation, and it will become theirs again.

‘If someone dedicates a portion of their inherited field to Yahweh, its value will be determined by the amount of seed it requires. A field that needs fifty shekels of barley seed will be valued at fifty shekels of silver.

If they dedicate their field at the start of the Year of Jubilee, its value will be set according to your valuation.

But if they dedicate their field after the Jubilee, the priest will calculate the money based on the number of years remaining until the next Year of Jubilee, and a deduction will be made from your valuation.

If the one who dedicated the field wants to buy it back, they must add one-fifth to the assessed valuation, and it will remain theirs.

If he doesn't buy back the field, or if he sells it to another person, it can no longer be bought back.

But when the Jubilee Year comes, the field will be set apart for Yahweh, like a field set aside for holy use. It will belong to the priests.

“‘If someone dedicates a field they bought to Yahweh, a field that isn't part of their inherited property,

then the priest will calculate its value for him up to the Year of Jubilee. On that day, he must pay the calculated value as a holy offering to Yahweh.

In the Year of Jubilee, the field will go back to the person who originally sold it, to whom the land belongs.

All your valuations must be based on the sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.

“‘No one may dedicate an animal that is already the firstborn, because it already belongs to Yahweh, whether it's an ox or a sheep. It is Yahweh's.

If the animal is unclean, he must buy it back according to your valuation and add one-fifth to its price. If it is not bought back, then it must be sold according to your valuation.

“‘However, nothing that a person sets apart completely for Yahweh from all they own—whether a person, an animal, or a field they possess—can be sold or bought back. Everything set apart completely is most holy to Yahweh.

“‘No person who has been completely set apart among people for Yahweh can be ransomed; they must surely be put to death.

“‘All the tithes of the land, whether from harvested grain or fruit from the trees, belong to Yahweh. They are holy to Yahweh.

If someone wants to buy back any part of their tithe, they must add one-fifth to its value.

For all tithes of herds and flocks, every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd's counting stick will be holy to Yahweh.

The owner must not check if it's good or bad, and they must not exchange it. If they do exchange it, then both the original animal and the exchanged animal will become holy and cannot be bought back.’

These are the commands Yahweh gave Moses for the people of Israel on Mount Sinai.
