Leviticus

Chapter 26

How to live close to a holy God.

“‘You must not make idols for yourselves, nor set up carved images or sacred pillars, nor place figured stones in your land to bow down to them; for I am Yahweh your God.

“‘You must observe my Sabbaths and show reverence for my sanctuary. I am Yahweh.

“‘If you follow my rules and obey my commands,

then I will send you rain at the proper time, and the land will produce its crops, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.

Your threshing season will last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest will last until planting time. You will eat your fill of bread and live securely in your land.

"I will bring peace to your land. You will be able to lie down, and no one will make you afraid. I will remove dangerous animals from the land, and no army will pass through your territory.

You will chase your enemies, and they will be defeated by your weapons.

Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand; your enemies will be defeated by your weapons.

I will look favorably on you, make you fruitful, multiply your numbers, and keep my agreement with you.

You will eat old food that has been stored for a long time, and you will have to move out the old to make room for the new harvest.

I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not reject you.

I will walk among you, I will be your God, and you will be my people.

I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt so you would not be their slaves. I broke the bars of your yoke and allowed you to walk upright.

"But if you don't listen to me and don't obey all these commandments,

and if you reject my laws and hate my rules, so that you don't obey all my commands and break my agreement with you,

then I will do this to you: I will bring terror upon you, including wasting diseases and fever that will dim your sight and cause you to waste away. You will plant your seeds in vain, because your enemies will eat the harvest.

I will turn against you, and you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you; you will run away even when no one is chasing you.

"If, despite all these things, you still don't listen to me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.

I will break down your proud strength, and I will make your sky like iron and your soil like bronze.

Your efforts will be useless; your land will not produce crops, and the trees of your land will not yield their fruit.

"If you defy me and refuse to listen to me, then I will bring seven times more plagues upon you, according to your sins.

I will send wild animals among you, which will steal your children, destroy your livestock, and leave you few in number. Your roads will become empty.

"If you are not reformed by these things but continue to defy me,

then I will also defy you; I, myself, will strike you seven times for your sins.

I will bring war upon you that will avenge the broken agreement. You will gather together in your cities, but I will send a plague among you. You will be handed over to your enemy.

When I take away your food supply, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will weigh out your bread. You will eat, but you won't be satisfied.

“‘If, despite all this, you still won’t listen to me, and you continue to oppose me,

then I will oppose you with anger. I will punish you seven times more for your sins.

You will be so hungry that you will eat the flesh of your sons, and you will eat the flesh of your daughters.

I will destroy your pagan altars, cut down your incense altars, and throw your dead bodies on top of your lifeless idols. My soul will strongly reject you.

I will turn your cities into ruins and devastate your holy places. I will not enjoy the pleasant smell of your offerings.

I will make your land desolate, and your enemies who live in it will be shocked by its condition.

I will scatter you among other nations, and I will unleash war against you. Your land will become a wasteland, and your cities will be destroyed.

Then the land will finally get to rest and enjoy its Sabbath years as long as it lies desolate while you are in your enemies' land. Even then, the land will have rest and enjoy its Sabbath years.

As long as it lies desolate, it will have the rest it didn’t get during your Sabbaths when you lived there.

“‘As for those of you who survive, I will make them so afraid in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a rustling leaf will make them run. They will flee as if from a sword, and they will fall even when no one is chasing them.

They will stumble over each other as if running from a sword, even when no one is chasing them. You will be powerless to stand against your enemies.

You will die among the nations, and the land of your enemies will consume you.

Those of you who are left will waste away because of your own wickedness in your enemies’ lands, and they will also waste away because of the wickedness of their ancestors.

“‘But if they confess their wickedness and the wickedness of their ancestors—how they betrayed me and opposed me—

and how I, in turn, opposed them and sent them into the land of their enemies—if their rebellious hearts are humbled and they accept the punishment for their sin—

then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and my covenant with Isaac, and my covenant with Abraham. I will also remember the land.

The land will be left by them and will enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. And they will accept the punishment for their wickedness because they rejected my laws and hated my commands.

Yet, for all that, even when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or hate them enough to completely destroy them or break my covenant with them, for I am Yahweh their God.

Instead, for their sake, I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of the land of Egypt right before the eyes of the nations, so that I might be their God. I am Yahweh.’”

These are the rules, regulations, and laws that Yahweh made between himself and the people of Israel on Mount Sinai through Moses.
