John

Chapter 20

Jesus, God in human form.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.

So she ran to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

Then Peter and the other disciple went out and headed toward the tomb.

They both ran together. The other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first.

He bent over and looked in, seeing the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go inside.

Then Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there,

and the cloth that had been on Jesus' head was not with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place.

Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in. He saw what happened and believed.

For they still did not understand the Scripture that said Jesus must rise from the dead.

So the disciples went back to their own homes.

But Mary was standing outside the tomb, crying. As she cried, she bent down and looked into the tomb,

and she saw two angels in white clothes sitting where Jesus' body had been. One was at the head and the other at the feet.

They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken my Lord away, and I don't know where they have put him."

After she said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she didn't realize it was Jesus.

Jesus asked her, "Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you put him, and I will go get him."

Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means "Teacher!").

Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I have not yet gone up to my Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going up to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had told her these things.

That evening, on the first day of the week, the disciples were together in a room with the doors locked because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples were joyful when they saw the Lord.

Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I am sending you."

After saying this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

But Thomas, one of the twelve disciples (also called Didymus), was not with them when Jesus came.

So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into the nail marks, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."

Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you."

Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and look at my hands. Put your hand here and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."

Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

Jesus said to him, "You have believed because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Jesus performed many other miraculous signs in front of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.

But these stories are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing, you may have life through his name.
