John

Chapter 19

Jesus, God in human form.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him beaten with whips.

The soldiers twisted thorn branches into a crown and put it on Jesus’ head, and they dressed him in a purple robe.

They kept coming up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and kept slapping him.

Pilate went out again and said to them, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”

So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Look, here is the man!”

When the leading priests and the officers saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate told them, “You take him and crucify him, because I find no basis for a charge against him.”

The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law, he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”

When Pilate heard this, he became even more afraid.

He went back into the palace and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not answer him.

Pilate then said to him, “Are you refusing to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the power to either release you or crucify you?”

Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me at all if it hadn’t been given to you from above. That is why the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

At this, Pilate wanted to release him, but the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend! Everyone who claims to be a king is speaking against Caesar!”

When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called “The Pavement,” or in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”

It was the Preparation Day of the Passover, around noon. Pilate said to the Jews, “Look, here is your King!”

They shouted, “Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Should I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

So Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led him away.

He went out, carrying his own cross, to the place called “The Place of a Skull,” which in Hebrew is “Golgotha.”

There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.

Pilate also wrote a sign and placed it on the cross. It read, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. It was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.

So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.”’”

Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

Then the soldiers, after they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic. The tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

They said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide who will get it.” This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, which says, “They divided my clothes among them, and for my garment they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things.

Standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister (Mary the wife of Clopas), and Mary Magdalene.

When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son!”

Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother!” From that time on, the disciple took her into his own home.

After this, Jesus, knowing that everything was now finished, and to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty.”

A jar full of sour wine was sitting there. So they soaked a sponge in the wine, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it to his mouth.

When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Because it was the Preparation Day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the crosses on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one). So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and their bodies taken down.

So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and the other man who were crucified with Jesus.

But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.

However, one of the soldiers stabbed Jesus' side with a spear, and immediately blood and water flowed out.

The person who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth so that you can believe.

These things happened to fulfill the Scripture that says, "Not one of his bones will be broken."

And another Scripture says, "They will look at the one they pierced."

After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus (but secretly because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate if he could take Jesus' body. Pilate gave him permission. So Joseph came and took his body.

Nicodemus, who had first come to Jesus at night, also came, bringing about 75 pounds of a mixture of myrrh and aloes.

They took Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, which was the Jewish custom for burial.

Now, there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified. In the garden was a new tomb where no one had ever been buried before.

Because it was the Jewish Preparation Day and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
