Before the Passover Festival, Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. He had loved his own people in the world, and he loved them to the very end.
It was during supper, and the devil had already put the idea into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray Jesus.
Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to God.
So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothes, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
Then he poured water into the basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, wiping them with the towel he had wrapped around himself.
Then he came to Simon Peter, who asked him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered him, "You don't understand what I am doing now, but you will understand later."
Peter told him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with me."
Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, don't just wash my feet, but also my hands and my head!"
Jesus said to him, "A person who has already bathed only needs to have their feet washed to be completely clean. And you yourselves are clean, though not all of you."
For Jesus knew who would betray him, which is why he said, "Not all of you are clean."
So when he had finished washing their feet, put on his outer clothing, and sat down again, he asked them, "Do you understand what I have done for you?
You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you are right to do so, because that's what I am.
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
I have given you an example so that you should do as I have done for you.
I tell you the truth, a servant is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.
If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But this is so that the Scripture will come true: 'The one who eats bread with me has turned against me.'
I am telling you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe that I am who I say I am.
I tell you the truth, whoever welcomes anyone I send welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me."
After Jesus said this, he was deeply troubled and declared, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me."
The disciples looked at one another, confused about whom he was speaking.
One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved, was reclining next to Jesus at the table.
Simon Peter motioned to him and said, "Ask him who it is he's talking about."
He leaned back against Jesus and asked, “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus replied, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it.” So, after dipping the bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
After Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “Do quickly what you are going to do.”
No one at the table understood why Jesus said this to him.
Some thought that since Judas was in charge of the money box, Jesus was telling him to “Buy what we need for the feast,” or to give something to the poor.
So Judas took the piece of bread and immediately left. It was night.
After Judas left, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been honored, and God has been honored through him.
If God has been honored through him, God will also honor him through Himself, and He will do it right away.
My dear children, I will be with you for only a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, ‘You cannot come where I am going,’ I am telling you the same now.
I am giving you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you should also love one another.
Everyone will know that you are my followers if you love one another.”
Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “You cannot follow me now to where I am going, but you will follow later.”
Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will give my life for you.”
Jesus answered him, “Will you really give your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.
