John

Chapter 1

Jesus, God in human form.

In the beginning, there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

Everything was made through him. Nothing was made without him.

In him was life, and that life was the light for humanity.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

He came to tell people about the light, so that everyone might believe through him.

John was not the light, but he was sent to tell people about the light.

The real light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and he made the world, but the world did not recognize him.

He came to his own people, but they did not accept him.

But to all who did accept him and believe in his name, he gave them the right to become children of God.

These children were not born by human parents or human desire, but by God.

The Word became a human and lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son, full of grace and truth.

John told people about him, shouting, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘The one who comes after me is greater than me, because he existed before me.’”

From his overflowing grace, we have all received blessing after blessing.

For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

No one has ever seen God. The one and only Son, who is himself God and is closest to the Father, has made him known.

This is John’s testimony: When the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”

He openly confessed and did not deny, but declared, “I am not the Christ.”

They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “No, I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

So they asked him, “Who are you? We need an answer for the people who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

He answered, “I am the voice of someone shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”

The people who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing people if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

John answered them, “I baptize with water, but there is someone standing among you whom you do not know.

He is the one who comes after me, the one I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals.”

These events took place in Bethany, on the other side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing.

The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man who comes after me is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’

I did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was to make him known to Israel.”

Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove and remain on him.

I still would not have recognized him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’

I saw this happen, and I testify that this is the Son of God.”

The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples.

He looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

Jesus turned around and saw them following. He asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying?”

He told them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent the rest of that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.

One of the two who heard John and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.

The first person Andrew found was his own brother, Simon, and he told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which means Christ).

He brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

The next day, Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”

Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and the prophets also wrote about: Jesus from Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

Nathanael asked him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip replied, "Come and see."

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Look, a true Israelite, in whom there is no dishonesty!"

Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, while you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

Nathanael answered him, "Teacher, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

Jesus replied to him, "Do you believe just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these!"

He told him, "I assure you, you will soon see heaven opened and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man."
