Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you watch when the deer have their fawns?
Can you count the months they carry their young? Or do you know the exact time they give birth?
They bend down, they give birth to their young. They finish their labor pains.
Their young ones grow strong. They grow up in the open field. They leave and never come back.
Who set the wild donkey free? Who untied the swift donkey?
I made its home in the wilderness, and the salt flats its dwelling place.
It ignores the city's noise and doesn't hear the driver's shouts.
The mountain range is its pasture; it searches for every green plant.
Will the wild ox agree to serve you? Or will it stay by your feeding trough?
Can you lead a wild ox with a harness to plow a field? Or will it plow the valleys for you?
Will you trust it because it is so strong? Or will you leave your work for it to do?
Will you rely on it to bring home your grain and gather the harvest from your threshing floor?
The ostrich's wings flap proudly, but are they like the feathers of a loving mother?
She leaves her eggs on the ground and warms them in the dust,
forgetting that a foot might crush them, or a wild animal might trample them.
She treats her young harshly, as if they weren't hers. Even if her effort is wasted, she has no fear,
because God has deprived her of wisdom and given her no understanding.
When she stands up, she laughs at horses and their riders.
Did you give the horse its strength? Did you clothe its neck with a flowing mane?
Did you make it leap like a locust? Its snorting is terrifying.
It paws the ground in the valley and rejoices in its strength. It goes out to meet armed men.
It laughs at fear and is not afraid, nor does it turn back from the sword.
The quiver rattles against it, along with the flashing spear and javelin.
It devours the ground with fierceness and rage; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.
Whenever the trumpet sounds, it snorts, 'Aha!' It smells the battle from afar, the thunder of commanders, and the shouting.
Is it by your wisdom that the hawk soars and spreads its wings toward the south?
Is it at your command that the eagle flies high and builds its nest on a high place?
It lives and makes its home on the cliff, on the peak of the cliff, in a strong fortress.
From there it spots its prey. Its eyes see it from far away.
Its young also drink blood; it is found wherever dead bodies are.”
