Job

Chapter 17

When good people suffer.

“My spirit is broken. My days are finished, and the grave is ready for me.

Surely mockers are with me; my eyes observe their hostility.

“Please, give a guarantee for me. Who else would make a pledge on my behalf?

For you have closed their minds to understanding, therefore you will not let them win.

Anyone who betrays friends for personal gain, the eyes of his children will grow weak.

“But he has made me a joke among the people; they spit in my face.

My vision is also dim from sorrow, and all my limbs are like a shadow.

Honest people will be shocked by this; the innocent will rise up against the ungodly.

Yet, good people will continue on their path; those with pure intentions will become stronger and stronger.

But as for all of you, come back to me; I won't find anyone wise among you.

My days are over, my plans are shattered, and so are the desires of my heart.

They turn night into day, saying, 'Light is near,' even while surrounded by darkness.

If I consider the grave my home, if I have made my bed in the darkness,

If I have said to decay, 'You are my father,' and to worms, 'My mother' and 'my sister,'

where then is my hope? As for my hope, who will see it fulfilled?

Will it go down with me to the gates of the grave, or descend with me into the dust?
