Isaiah

Chapter 63

Hope and the coming Savior.

Who is this coming from Edom, with blood-stained clothes from Bozrah? Who is this, glorious in his clothing, marching in his great strength? "It is I, who speak with righteousness, mighty to save."

Why are your clothes red, and your garments like someone who has been stomping grapes in a wine press?

"I have stomped the wine press alone; no one from the nations was with me. Yes, I stomped them in my anger, and crushed them in my fury. Their lifeblood has splattered on my clothes, and I have stained all my clothing.

For the day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year for my redeemed to be set free had come."

I looked, and there was no one to help; I was amazed that no one offered support. So my own strength brought me victory, and my own anger sustained me.

In my anger, I crushed nations. I made them drunk with my wrath and poured out their lifeblood on the earth.

I will declare Yahweh’s faithful love and praise Yahweh for all that he has given us. I will commend his great goodness to the people of Israel, given to them according to his compassion and his many acts of faithful love.

For Yahweh said, "Surely, they are my people, children who will not lie." So he became their Savior.

In all their suffering, he also suffered, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and pity, he rescued them. He lifted them up and carried them through all the days of the past.

But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them.

Then he remembered the days of the past, Moses and his people, saying, "Where is the one who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of his flock? Where is the one who put his Holy Spirit among them?"

Who caused his glorious strength to be at Moses’ right hand? Who divided the waters before them to make a lasting name for himself?

Who led them through the deep waters, like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did not stumble?

Like livestock going down into a valley, the Spirit of Yahweh gave them rest. That is how you led your people, to make a glorious name for yourself.

Look down from heaven, from your holy and glorious dwelling. Where are your passion and your mighty deeds? Your deep feelings and your compassion are held back from me.

For you are our Father, even though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, Yahweh, are our Father. Your name is our Redeemer from everlasting.

O Yahweh, why do you make us wander from your ways and harden our hearts so we do not fear you? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.

Your holy people possessed your land for only a short time. Our enemies have trampled your sanctuary.

We have become like those over whom you never ruled, like those who were not called by your name.
