Therefore, let us be careful that none of you fail to receive the promise of entering his rest.
For we have also heard the good news, just as they did. But the message they heard did not help them, because they did not combine it with faith.
We who have believed do enter that rest, as God has said, “As I swore in my anger, they will never enter my rest.” This was said even though his works were finished from the creation of the world.
For somewhere it speaks about the seventh day this way: “And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.”
And in this passage again, he says, “They will never enter my rest.”
Since it remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who first heard the good news did not enter because of their disobedience,
God again set a certain day, calling it “today.” He spoke about this through David much later (as already mentioned), “Today, if you hear his voice, don’t be stubborn.”
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.
So there is still a Sabbath rest for God's people.
Because anyone who enters God's rest also rests from their own work, just as God rested from his.
So let's try our best to enter that rest. Otherwise, someone might fail by following the same example of disobedience.
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting through to divide soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
No creature can hide from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of the one to whom we must give an account.
Since we have a great high priest, Jesus, the Son of God, who has gone through the heavens, let us hold firmly to what we believe.
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin.
So let us come boldly to the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace to help us when we need it.
