Genesis

Chapter 9

The beginning of everything.

God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.

All the animals on the earth, all the birds in the sky, all the creatures that crawl on the ground, and all the fish in the sea will fear you and dread you; they are given into your power.

Every moving creature that is alive will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

But you must not eat meat that still has its lifeblood in it.

I will certainly demand an accounting for your lifeblood; I will demand it from every animal, and from every human. I will demand the life of a human from another human.

Whoever spills human blood, by humans their blood will be spilled, because God made humans in his own image.

Be fruitful and multiply. Multiply on the earth and increase greatly on it.”

Then God said to Noah and his sons,

“Look, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your descendants after you,

and with every living creature that is with you—the birds, the livestock, and all the wild animals on the earth that came out of the ark with you.

I will establish my covenant with you: never again will all living things be cut off by the waters of a flood; there will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

God also said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, for all future generations:

I am putting my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,

I will remember my promise to you and every living thing. The waters will never again become a flood to destroy all life.

When the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will look at it and remember the eternal promise between God and every living creature on earth.

God said to Noah, “This rainbow is the sign of the promise I have made between me and all living things on earth.”

The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan.

These three were Noah’s sons, and from them, people spread out over the entire earth.

Noah, who was a farmer, planted a vineyard.

He drank some of the wine, got drunk, and lay uncovered inside his tent.

Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and told his two brothers who were outside.

Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it over both their shoulders, walked backward into the tent, and covered their father’s naked body. They kept their faces turned away so they would not see their father’s nakedness.

When Noah woke up from his drunken sleep, he learned what his youngest son had done to him.

He said, “Canaan is cursed! He will be the lowest servant to his brothers.”

He also said, “May Yahweh, the God of Shem, be praised! May Canaan be Shem’s servant.

May God give Japheth plenty of room. May Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his servant.”

Noah lived for 350 years after the flood.

Noah lived a total of 950 years, and then he died.
