Chapter 40

The beginning of everything.

After these events, the king of Egypt's cupbearer and baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the very place where Joseph was being held.

The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and Joseph took care of them. They stayed in prison for a long time.

One night, both men, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were held captive in prison, each had a dream, each with its own meaning.

Joseph came in to them in the morning, saw them, and noticed that they looked sad.

He asked Pharaoh's officials, who were in custody with him in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?"

They told him, “We had a dream, and no one can explain it.” Joseph said to them, “Doesn’t God provide interpretations? Please tell me your dreams.”

The chief cup bearer told Joseph his dream, saying, “In my dream, look, I saw a grapevine in front of me.

On the vine were three branches. It was as if it budded, then blossomed, and its clusters grew ripe grapes.

Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and then gave the cup to Pharaoh.”

Joseph said to him, “This is what your dream means: the three branches are three days.

In three more days, Pharaoh will acknowledge you and put you back in your job. You will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cup bearer.

But please remember me when things go well for you. Show me kindness, mention me to Pharaoh, and help me get out of this prison.

Because I was indeed kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I haven’t done anything to deserve being put in this dungeon.”

When the chief baker saw that Joseph’s interpretation was positive, he said to Joseph, “I also had a dream. Look, there were three baskets of white bread on my head.

In the top basket, there were all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

Joseph answered, “This is what your dream means. The three baskets are three days.

In three more days, Pharaoh will lift your head off you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.”

On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he held a feast for all his servants. He brought out the chief cup bearer and the chief baker in front of his servants.

He restored the chief cup bearer to his position again, and the cup bearer gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand;

but he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had told them.

Yet the chief cup bearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.
