Joseph was brought to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there.
Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a successful man. He lived in the house of his Egyptian master.
His master saw that Yahweh was with him and that Yahweh made everything he did succeed.
Joseph gained favor with Potiphar and became his personal attendant. Potiphar made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of everything he owned.
From the time Potiphar made Joseph overseer of his house and of all he owned, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. Yahweh's blessing was on everything Potiphar had, both in his house and in his fields.
Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph's care. He didn't worry about anything except the food he ate. (Joseph was well-built and handsome.)
After these events, his master's wife looked at Joseph with desire and said, "Sleep with me."
But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master doesn't know what is going on with me in the house; he has put everything he owns in my care.
No one in this house is greater than I am, and he has not kept anything from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"
Even though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen to her, lie with her, or be with her.
Around that time, Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house were inside.
She grabbed his clothes and said, "Sleep with me!" He left his clothes in her hand and ran outside.
When she saw that he had left his clothes in her hand and run outside,
she called to the men of her house and told them, "Look, he brought a Hebrew man here to make fun of us. He came in to sleep with me, and I screamed loudly."
She continued, "When he heard me raise my voice and scream, he left his clothes by me and ran outside."
She kept his clothes by her until his master came home.
She told him the story, saying, "The Hebrew servant you brought to us came in to make fun of me.
And as soon as I raised my voice and screamed, he left his clothes by me and ran outside."
When his master heard his wife's words, in which she said, "This is what your servant did to me," he became very angry.
Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were held captive. Joseph was kept there.
But Yahweh was with Joseph, showed him kindness, and made the prison keeper favor him.
The prison keeper put all the prisoners in the prison under Joseph's charge. Whatever they did there, Joseph was responsible for it.
The prison keeper didn't supervise anything that was under Joseph's control, because Yahweh was with him; and whatever Joseph did, Yahweh made it succeed.
