Genesis

Chapter 23

The beginning of everything.

Sarah lived for 127 years. This is how long Sarah lived.

Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

Abraham got up from beside his dead wife and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,

“I am a foreigner and a temporary resident among you. Please give me a burial place here so I can bury my dead out of my sight.”

The children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,

“Listen to us, my lord. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the best of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb for burying your dead.”

Abraham stood up and bowed down to the people of the land, the children of Heth.

He said to them, “If you are willing for me to bury my dead out of my sight, then listen to me and ask Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf,

to give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns, at the edge of his field. I want him to sell it to me at its full price, for a burial place among you.”

Ephron was sitting among the other Hittites. Ephron the Hittite replied to Abraham, in the hearing of all the Hittites and everyone who came through the city gate. He said,

“No, my master, listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead.”

Abraham bowed down before the people of the land.

Then he spoke to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “Please, if you are willing, listen to me. I will pay the price for the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there.”

Ephron answered Abraham,

“My master, listen to me. What is a piece of land worth 400 shekels of silver between you and me? Just go and bury your dead.”

Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms. Abraham weighed out the amount Ephron had named in the hearing of the Hittites—400 shekels of silver, weighed according to the standard used by merchants.

So Ephron’s field in Machpelah, near Mamre, including the field itself, the cave in it, and all the trees within its boundaries, became legally transferred

to Abraham as his property, witnessed by all the Hittites and everyone who came through the city gate.

After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave of the field of Machpelah, in front of Mamre (also known as Hebron), in the land of Canaan.

The Hittites legally transferred the field and the cave in it to Abraham as a burial place.
