Genesis

Chapter 22

The beginning of everything.

After these events, God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" Abraham replied, "Here I am."

Then God said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt sacrifice on one of the mountains I will show you."

Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, along with his son Isaac. He cut the wood for the burnt sacrifice, then set out and went to the place God had told him about.

On the third day, Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

Abraham told his young men, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and then we will come back to you."

Abraham took the wood for the burnt sacrifice and placed it on his son Isaac. He carried the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two of them walked on together.

Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, "Father?" Abraham answered, "Yes, my son." Isaac asked, "Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt sacrifice?"

Abraham replied, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt sacrifice, my son." So the two of them continued walking together.

When they arrived at the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood. Then he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.

Then the angel of Yahweh called to him from heaven, "Abraham, Abraham!" He answered, "Here I am."

The angel said, "Do not lay a hand on the boy, or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush behind him. He went and took the ram, and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Abraham named that place Yahweh Will Provide. To this day people say, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”

Yahweh’s angel called to Abraham a second time from heaven,

and said, “Yahweh declares, ‘I swear by myself that because you have done this and have not kept back your son, your only son,

I will bless you greatly. I will multiply your descendants so they will be like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer their enemies’ cities.

All the nations on earth will be blessed through your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’ ”

Then Abraham returned to his young men, and they all set out together for Beersheba. Abraham lived in Beersheba.

After these events, Abraham was told, “Look, Milcah has also had children with your brother Nahor:

Uz, his firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (who was the father of Aram),

Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.”

Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These are the eight children Milcah had with Nahor, Abraham’s brother.

His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had children: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
