Ezekiel

Chapter 26

Wild visions of God's glory.

In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

“Son of man, because Tyre has spoken against Jerusalem, saying, ‘Aha! The gate of the nations is broken; it has turned to me. I will become rich, now that Jerusalem is ruined.’

Therefore, the Lord Yahweh says: Look, I am against you, Tyre. I will bring many nations against you, like the sea bringing up its waves.

They will destroy the walls of Tyre and tear down its towers. I will scrape its dust from it and make it a bare rock.

It will become a place for spreading nets in the middle of the sea. For I have spoken it, says the Lord Yahweh, and it will become plunder for the nations.

Tyre's towns in the countryside will be killed by swords, and then they will know that I am Yahweh.

Because the Lord Yahweh says, 'Look, I will bring Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, the king of kings, from the north to attack Tyre. He will come with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a large army.'

He will kill your towns in the countryside with the sword. He will build siege ramps and earthworks against you and raise his shields against you.

He will use his battering rams against your walls and break down your towers with his axes.

The huge number of his horses will kick up so much dust that you won't be able to see. Your walls will shake from the noise of the cavalry, wagons, and chariots when he enters your gates, just like an army entering a city through a breach in the wall.

His horses' hooves will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with swords, and your strong pillars will fall to the ground.

They will steal your wealth and take your goods as plunder. They will break down your walls and destroy your beautiful houses. They will throw your stones, timber, and dirt into the sea.

I will stop the sound of your songs, and the music from your harps will no longer be heard.

I will make you a bare rock, a place for spreading fishing nets. You will never be rebuilt, for I, Yahweh, have spoken it, says the Lord Yahweh.

The Lord Yahweh asks Tyre, 'Won't the islands tremble at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan, and when so many are killed within you?'

Then all the rulers of the sea will step down from their thrones. They will take off their robes and embroidered clothing. They will dress themselves in fear and sit on the ground, trembling constantly and shocked by what has happened to you.

They will sing a sad song about you and say, 'How you are destroyed! You were once full of sailors, a famous city, powerful on the sea with your people, spreading terror to everyone who lived there!'

Now the islands will tremble on the day of your downfall. Yes, the islands in the sea will be dismayed when you are gone.

For the Lord Yahweh says: 'I will make you a desolate city, like cities that are empty. I will bring the deep waters over you, and the great oceans will cover you.

Then I will send you down with those who go to the pit, to the people of ancient times. I will make you live in the lowest parts of the earth, in places desolate since long ago, with those who go to the pit, so you will no longer be inhabited. And I will establish glory in the land of the living.'

I will make you a horror, and you will no longer exist. Although people may search for you, you will never be found again, says the Lord Yahweh.
