1If someone steals an ox or a sheep and kills or sells it, he must pay back five oxen for one ox and four sheep for one sheep.
2If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck and dies, the person who struck him is not guilty of murder.
3But if the sun has already risen when this happens, the person who struck the thief is guilty of murder; the thief must pay for what he stole. If he has nothing, he must be sold to pay for his theft.
4If the stolen animal, whether an ox, donkey, or sheep, is found alive in his possession, he must pay back double.
5If someone grazes his animals in another person's field or vineyard, allowing them to eat the crops, he must pay back with the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.
6If a fire starts and spreads through thorns, burning up stacks of grain, standing grain, or an entire field, the person who started the fire must pay for the damage.
7If someone gives money or goods to a neighbor to keep safe, and it is stolen from that person's house, if the thief is found, he must pay double.
8If the thief is not found, the owner of the house must take an oath before God to show that he did not take his neighbor's goods.
9For every dispute involving property—whether an ox, donkey, sheep, clothing, or any other lost item—about which someone claims, 'This is mine,' both parties must present their case before God. The person God declares guilty must pay double to his neighbor.
10If a man gives his neighbor a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any other animal to keep, and it dies, gets hurt, or is taken away, and no one saw what happened;
11the neighbor who was keeping the animal must swear before Yahweh that he did not harm the neighbor's property. The owner must accept this, and the neighbor does not have to pay for it.
12But if the animal was stolen from him, he must pay its owner for it.
13If the animal was torn apart by a wild animal, he should bring the remains as proof. He does not have to pay for the animal that was torn apart.
14If a man borrows anything from his neighbor and it gets hurt or dies while its owner is not with it, the borrower must definitely pay for it.
15If the owner was with it, the borrower does not have to pay for it. If the item was rented, the rental fee covers its loss.
16If a man tricks a virgin who is not engaged and has sex with her, he must definitely pay the bridal price and marry her.
17If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the amount of money that is the usual bridal price for virgins.
18You must not allow a sorceress to live.
19Anyone who has sex with an animal must be put to death.
20Anyone who offers sacrifices to any god, except to Yahweh alone, will be completely destroyed.
21You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners, because you yourselves were foreigners in the land of Egypt.
22You must not take advantage of any widow or child without a father.
23If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.
24Then my anger will burn, and I will kill you with a sword; your wives will become widows, and your children will be fatherless.
25If you lend money to any of my people among you who are poor, do not act like a creditor. Do not charge them interest.
26If you take your neighbor’s garment as security for a loan, you must return it to them before the sun sets,
27because it is their only covering; it is the garment they wear for their skin. What else would they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, because I am gracious.
28You must not speak evil of God, nor curse a ruler of your people.
29You must not delay in offering from your harvest and from the first products of your presses. You must give me the firstborn of your sons.
30You must do the same with your cattle and sheep. A newborn animal must stay with its mother for seven days; on the eighth day, you must give it to me.
31You must be my holy people, so you must not eat any meat that animals have torn in the field. Throw it to the dogs instead.
