Now these are the commands, statutes, and rules that Yahweh your God instructed me to teach you, so that you may obey them in the land you are about to enter and possess.
This is so you, your children, and your grandchildren may respect Yahweh your God and obey all his statutes and commands that I am giving you throughout your lives, so that you may live a long time.
So listen, Israel, and be careful to obey, so that things may go well for you and you may greatly increase in number, just as Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
Listen, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is the only God.
You must love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Keep these words that I am giving you today in your heart.
Diligently teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home, when you are traveling, when you lie down, and when you get up.
Tie them on your hand as a reminder, and wear them on your forehead.
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
When Yahweh your God brings you into the land he promised your ancestors — Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — and gives you large, prosperous cities that you didn't build,
and houses full of good things that you didn't provide, and cisterns that you didn't dig, and vineyards and olive trees that you didn't plant, and you eat until you are full,
be careful not to forget Yahweh, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land where you were slaves.
You must respect Yahweh your God, serve him, and make promises in his name.
Do not follow other gods, the gods of the people around you,
because Yahweh your God, who is among you, is a jealous God. Otherwise, Yahweh your God might become angry with you and wipe you off the face of the earth.
Don't test Yahweh your God, as you tested him at Massah.
Carefully obey the commands, testimonies, and laws of Yahweh your God that he has given you.
Do what is right and good in Yahweh’s sight so that things may go well for you, and you can go in and take possession of the good land that Yahweh promised your ancestors,
to drive out all your enemies before you, just as Yahweh said.
In the future, when your child asks you, “What is the meaning of the testimonies, statutes, and ordinances that Yahweh our God has commanded you?”
then tell your child, “We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and Yahweh brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand.
Yahweh performed great and terrifying signs and wonders against Egypt, Pharaoh, and his entire household right before our eyes.
He brought us out from there so that he could bring us in and give us the land he promised our ancestors.
Yahweh commanded us to obey all these laws and to respect Yahweh our God, for our own good always, so that he might keep us alive, as we are today.
It will be considered righteous for us if we carefully obey this entire command before Yahweh our God, just as he has commanded us.”
