Moses called all Israel together and said to them, "Listen, Israel, to the rules and regulations I am telling you today, so you can learn and obey them."
Yahweh our God made an agreement with us at Horeb.
Yahweh did not make this agreement with our ancestors, but with us, all of us who are alive here today.
Yahweh spoke with you face to face on the mountain from the middle of the fire,
(I stood between Yahweh and you at that time to tell you Yahweh’s word, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain) saying,
"I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
"You must not have any other gods besides me.
"You must not make any idol for yourself, or any likeness of anything in heaven above, on the earth below, or in the waters under the earth.
You must not bow down to them or worship them, because I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God. I will punish the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren for the sins of their parents who hate me,
but I will show unfailing love to thousands who love me and obey my commands.
"You must not misuse the name of Yahweh your God, because Yahweh will not consider anyone innocent who misuses his name."
"Keep the Sabbath day holy, just as Yahweh your God commanded you."
"You may work and do all your tasks for six days,"
"but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to Yahweh your God. On this day, you must not do any work—neither you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your livestock, nor any foreigner living in your towns. This is so your male and female servants can rest just like you."
"Remember that you were once slaves in Egypt, and Yahweh your God used his great power and strength to bring you out of there. That is why Yahweh your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day."
"Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you, so that you may live long and prosper in the land Yahweh your God is giving you."
"You must not murder."
"You must not commit adultery."
"You must not steal."
"You must not lie in court against your neighbor."
"You must not have a strong desire for your neighbor's wife. Do not desire your neighbor's house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor."
Yahweh spoke these words to your entire assembly from the mountain, out of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice. He said nothing more. Then he wrote these words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.
When you heard the voice coming from the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, all the leaders of your tribes and your elders came to me.
You said, "Look, Yahweh our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that God truly speaks with people, and they can live."
But now, why should we die? This great fire will consume us. If we hear Yahweh our God's voice again, we will die.
What person among all humanity has ever heard the voice of the living God speaking from fire, as we have, and lived?
You go near and listen to everything Yahweh our God says. Then you tell us everything Yahweh our God tells you, and we will listen and obey.
Yahweh heard what you said to me; and Yahweh said to me, "I have heard what these people said to you. They have spoken well in everything they have said.
If only they would always have such a heart, to respect me and obey all my commands, so that things might go well for them and their children forever!
Go tell them, 'Return to your tents.'
But you, Moses, stand here with me, and I will tell you all the commands, laws, and rules that you must teach them, so they can obey them in the land I am giving them to own."
So you must be careful to do exactly as Yahweh your God has commanded you; do not turn to the right or to the left.
Walk in the path Yahweh your God has commanded you, so that you may live, and things may go well for you, and you may live a long time in the land you will possess.
