These are the terms of the agreement Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the people of Israel in Moab, in addition to the agreement he made with them at Horeb.
Moses called all of Israel together and told them, "You have seen with your own eyes everything Yahweh did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to his entire land.
You saw the great trials, the miraculous signs, and those great wonders.
But even to this day, Yahweh has not given you a heart that understands, eyes that truly see, or ears that truly hear.
I led you through the wilderness for forty years. Your clothes didn't wear out, and your sandals didn't wear out on your feet.
You didn't eat bread or drink wine or strong drink so that you would know that I am Yahweh, your God.
When we arrived at this place, Sihon, the king of Heshbon, and Og, the king of Bashan, came out to fight us, and we defeated them.
We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half of the tribe of Manasseh.
So carefully keep and obey the terms of this agreement, so that you may succeed in everything you do.
Today, all of you are standing before Yahweh your God: your leaders, your tribes, your elders, your officers, and all the men of Israel,
your little children, your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps, from those who cut your wood to those who draw your water.
You are here to enter into the agreement with Yahweh your God, and into the oath that Yahweh your God is making with you today.
He is establishing you today as his people, and he will be your God, just as he promised you and swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
I am not making this agreement and this oath with you alone,
but with everyone who is standing here with us today before Yahweh our God, and also with those who are not here with us today.
(because you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we traveled through the nations you passed through;
and you saw their disgusting practices and their idols made of wood, stone, silver, and gold, which were among them);
This is so that no man, woman, family, or tribe among you today will turn their heart away from Yahweh our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. This is so that no root among you produces bitter poison.
If someone hears the words of this curse but reassures himself, saying, 'I will be fine, even if I stubbornly follow my own desires, destroying everything in my path,'
Yahweh will not forgive him. Instead, Yahweh’s anger and jealousy will burn against that person, and all the curses written in this book will fall on him. Yahweh will erase his name from under the sky.
Yahweh will separate him for disaster from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the agreement written in this book of the law.
Future generations, your children who will grow up after you, and foreigners who come from distant lands, will say, when they see the plagues and diseases Yahweh has brought upon that land,
and when they see that the whole land is sulfur, salt, and burning, completely infertile, producing no plants or grass, like the overthrow of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which Yahweh destroyed in his anger and wrath,
even all the nations will ask, 'Why did Yahweh do this to this land? What is the meaning of this intense anger?'
Then people will say, 'Because they abandoned the agreement with Yahweh, the God of their ancestors, which he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt,
and they went and served other gods and worshiped them—gods they did not know and that he had not given them.
Therefore, Yahweh’s anger burned against this land, bringing upon it all the curses written in this book.'
Yahweh uprooted them from their land in anger, wrath, and great fury, and threw them into another land, as it is today.
The secret things belong to Yahweh our God, but the revealed things belong to us and our children forever, so that we may obey all the words of this law.
