Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commands that I am giving you today.
On the day you cross the Jordan River into the land Yahweh your God is giving you, you must set up large stones and cover them with plaster.
You must write all the words of this law on them after you have crossed over, so that you may enter the land that Yahweh your God is giving you—a land rich with milk and honey, just as Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
When you have crossed the Jordan, you must set up these stones, which I am commanding you today, on Mount Ebal, and you must cover them with plaster.
There you must build an altar to Yahweh your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.
You must build the altar of Yahweh your God with natural, uncut stones. You must offer burnt offerings on it to Yahweh your God.
You must sacrifice fellowship offerings and eat there. You must celebrate before Yahweh your God.
You must write all the words of this law on the stones very clearly.”
Moses and the Levite priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be quiet and listen, Israel! Today you have become the people of Yahweh your God.
Therefore, you must obey the voice of Yahweh your God and carry out his commands and his rules, which I am giving you today.”
Moses commanded the people that same day, saying,
“These tribes must stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people when you have crossed the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin.
These tribes must stand on Mount Ebal for the curse: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
With a loud voice, the Levites must say to all the men of Israel,
‘Cursed is anyone who makes an idol, whether carved or cast, which is disgusting to Yahweh, created by a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ All the people will answer and say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary marker.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who leads a blind person astray on the road.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who denies justice to foreigners, orphans, or widows.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father’s wife, because he dishonors his father’s marriage bed.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who sleeps with any kind of animal.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his sister, whether his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who secretly kills his neighbor.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who takes a bribe to kill an innocent person.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’
‘Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by obeying them.’ All the people will say, ‘Amen.’”
