Deuteronomy

Chapter 26

Moses' final words before the Promised Land.

When you enter the land that Yahweh your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and settle in it,

you must take some of the first fruits of all the produce of the soil that you harvest from the land Yahweh your God is giving you. Put them in a basket and go to the place Yahweh your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name.

Go to the priest who is serving in those days and tell him, “Today I declare to Yahweh your God that I have entered the land that Yahweh swore to our ancestors to give us.”

The priest will take the basket from your hand and set it down in front of the altar of Yahweh your God.

Then you will proclaim before Yahweh your God: “My father was a wandering Aramean, ready to die. He went down to Egypt with a small group of people and lived there, where he became a great, powerful, and numerous nation.

The Egyptians mistreated us, made us suffer, and forced us into harsh labor.

Then we cried out to Yahweh, the God of our ancestors. Yahweh heard our cry and saw our misery, our hard work, and our oppression.

So Yahweh brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand, with an outstretched arm, with terrifying acts, with signs, and with wonders;

and he has brought us to this place and has given us this land, a land rich with milk and honey.

Now, I have brought the first of the produce from the ground that you, Yahweh, have given me.” You must place it before Yahweh your God and worship him.

You must be joyful in all the good things that Yahweh your God has given to you and your household—you, the Levite, and the foreigner living among you.

When you have finished setting aside all the tenth of your harvest in the third year, which is the year for tithing, then you must give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow, so they can eat and be satisfied within your towns.

You must say before Yahweh your God, “I have removed the holy things from my house and have given them to the Levite, the foreigner, the orphan, and the widow, exactly as you commanded me. I have not disobeyed any of your commands, nor have I forgotten them.

I have not eaten any of it while I was mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean, nor have I offered any of it for the dead. I have listened to the voice of Yahweh my God. I have done everything you commanded me.

Look down from your holy dwelling place, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the land you have given us, just as you promised our ancestors—a land rich with milk and honey.”

Today Yahweh your God is commanding you to follow these rules and regulations. Therefore, you must obey and carry them out with all your heart and all your being.

Today you have declared that Yahweh is your God, and that you will live according to his ways, keep his rules, his commands, and his regulations, and listen to his voice.

Today Yahweh has declared that you are his own special people, as he promised you, and that you should keep all his commands.

He will make you higher than all the nations he has made, in praise, in name, and in honor; and you will be a holy people to Yahweh your God, as he has said.
